is an upgraded oil cooler really going to make much difference in that case though? i always take it easy on my first run to get motor, trans, gears, and tires warmed up

Car is going to cool down in 2hrs time. Then you have to go get on grid and be ready for your first run. Not a lot of warm up time. I have to ditch my corner station early so I can go warm my car up before I go to grid...


You can do what you want, but actually measuring oil temps could save you $500 and the annoyance of the car taking a decent bit longer to warm up if your car is fine as is.

The oil shouldn't take longer to warm up because there's a thermostat in the filter housing. IIRC it doesn't open until 180 so no oil is circulated through the cooler under that temp. Adding a larger sump will increase warm up time.

^Thats a good point however a larger cooler means more oil sitting in the cooler which is then eventually circulated through the rest of the engine. So it still may extend the amount of time it takes to warm up.

I will say that is the one thing that Im not looking forward to between a larger sump as well as the cooler. But I honestly doubt the Setrab cooler I have holds that much more fluid.

I have one of those Tomei oil thermo stat delete things. I never installed if for that reason.

My experience with oil coolers:

- I was seeing 290* with my stock oil cooler and pan during summer time HPDE. Whoa.
- Weather cooled down and I went to a 6.5qt wet sump pan, MAP B&M oil cooler, and 20w50 oil and the car took so long to get to operating temp, I thought the sensor was broken LOL. Once it did, temps were still going higher than I'd like.
- Swapped to 5w40 oil, a MAP Setrab cooler with an 8" fan. I ran Buttonwillow during June. I don't remember seeing temps above 250ish at all. I ran MRLS in November. Obviously cooler ambient temp, but it stayed down below 240, according to my video. The fan was added because I needed a way to cool the oil in staging (AX) and after HPDE sessions, when I'm parked. With the thinner oil, it got up to temp much sooner. It took so long before, I could let the car idle 5mins, drive to my GF's house across town, and STILL be a hair above 140*.

I will never run another cooler besides Setrab or better. The upgrade was WELL worth it. The fan works awesome. Also, the MAP kit bolted right up, no problems.

I've got an AMS kit on my car, my next cooling mod I'm looking to do is add a fan like that. Been looking at Spal and Setrab fans. I probably won't do it until I get a good idea of how it's doing with the cooler alone since I haven't gotten on track since putting the cooler on.

A little off topic, how often are people needing to add oil during events for built motors.

I'm on a built motor with a recirculated catch can. Car seems to consume a decent amount.

Haha thanks. I don't feel like I've done anything super crazy, mostly just cleaning up loose ends that previous owners left laying around.

It's on the list but towards the bottom, autobahn always seems to be more expensive than other tracks. I was looking at their membership stuff a few days ago, $40k +$5k/year, definitely not a poor man's membership haha.

My list to hit for this coming season is Gingerman (2-3 times), Blackhawk Farms (1-2 times), Grattan (1 time), Waterford Hills (1-2 times), Autobahn (1 time). That would be ideal for me but it's all going to come down what my budget comes in at after I'm done with school.

The thermostat doesn't block flow to the cooler though. It allows 50/50 flow. When oil is up to temp, it blocks the bypass. It's not as good as the tstat for the coolant.

I'm on a built motor and I don't really consume oil, mine tends to flow into the catch can during high G's and I check and add oil as needed. I don't like reusing that oil because if you let it sit, you can see the water separation. I personally wouldn't put that back in.
