Question 2.1L Stroker 4G63 Evo 8

Hi all,

Looking at building a 2.1L/2.2L stroker engine for my Evo 8.

4G63 Block and 94mm stroke crankshaft

I've read multiple threads and found that you can use either 150mm, 153mm or 156mm rods.

What would you choose and why? Does anyone know the Pros & Cons of each?

What stroke crank shaft are you putting into which block?

With 94mm, 150mm or 153mm rods. 156mm rods won't leave any room for the bottom oil ring. 153mm is the best combo if you have a big budget and want to squeeze out every ounce of power.

I've read about others that run the 156mm long rods on 94mm and claimed to have no problems revving to 9000 RPM. But my calculations don't agree. If you want a race car where you are refreshing the engine often, then this could work well.

How do you plan to use this motor? Daily or track? How often do you plan to refresh motor? How much power do you plan on making for regular driving and how much for all out races? Tranny build and gears?

Thanks for the reply. Mostly street and occasional track work. Looking support around 600-700hp at the wheels.

Not planning to refresh the motor, so I would like it to be as reliable as possible.

I'm leaning towards 150mm as 153mm seems quite hard to source.

153mm Rods and appropriate pistons can easily be sourced from English Racing.

Building a 600-700whp four cylinder and "not planning to refresh it" don't exactly go hand in hand.

How often and what would you recommend refreshing?

I am considering getting a ER 2.2l short block with an MHI FP RED. Would probably only make about 550whp on kill mode but your statement makes me wonder if I should take an engine rebuild class lol

There's no set interval. But when you're making 150-200hp/cylinder, stuff doesn't go 100k miles.

Refreshing interval is based on how much power you're running your engine and how often. If constantly running on street/freeway in kill mode (700whp) I wouldn't wait to refresh more than every 30k miles. If running on street/freeway in mild mode (600whp) and not always getting on it until track days on occasion in kill mode, I'd probably refresh every 50k. The trick is to refresh to catch anything going offspec before engine fails. Bearings are cheap. Gaskets can add up. But failure could cost as much as a new build. You gotta pay to play!

What piston would you choose for 153mm rods?

Carillo rods and Wiseco pistons from English Racing.
