One of the laptops I use would not connect with USB adapter, I grabbed another laptop with serial port and it worked fine......If you figure out a way to make it work then please let me know as I would rather be using the computer with the USB ports.
I needed the correct driver to use a USB to DB9 Serial adapter (came with it). Just used mine the other day, it worked fine with XMAP. I couldnt get it to work with XUPDATE though; everytime I tried picking COM 4 port (which is where XMAP found connection) it kept saying that COM1 was being used by another program, it was as if it wanted to use COM 1 reguardless of what you set.
EDIT: I used the RadioShack brand adapter

I have the Belkin and it doesn't work with the Xede, at least for me. It works fine with my GPS, though. I picked up an iConcepts at CompUSA and it works fine with the Xede.
I tried a couple others while I was at CompUSA and none of them worked. I don't recall the models, I know they did not have the SIIG.

Does this look like the correct SIIG part? I hope so, it's only $15.47:

yeah, i tried all different sorts of connectors with my IBM thinkpad and none of them worked.
a while ago, someone on here said that a pcmcia to serial adapter would work, but 1) i haven't tried it, and 2) its really expensive
im thinking i may just buy the port replicator for the laptop, that way i'll have a serial port.

I chose the belkin for 1, i got a great deal on it...We use belkin products here at my work in the IT dept (whick i work in) and belkin makes good stuff. It will be going on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.
IIRC, the baud rate is set by XMap and is not user selectable. I tried one adapter (Keyspan, I believe) at CompUSA that had a nice driver that allowed modifying some settings of how it handled the data flow. Here's the link for the documentation:

I played with all the settings, but couldn't get it to work. I was looking forward to using that adapter, too, as it allowed monitoring the data flow between the devices.
BTW, I am using a Toshiba Satellite with XP Pro.

I'm using a Keyspan 19USA on a Mac, running Virtual PC, with the XEDE software running on that. If that hay stack can come together, I'll bet it would work on a real world PC. Make sure you have you updates, drivers, and good serial cable (The one that Vishnu provides)
Be sure that you follow the start up sequence carefully. I've gotten sloppy a few times and mine stopped working a few times.
Good Luck

anyways...it would not give me an error message for any of the COM ports except 1-3...so i was trying 4 and it never worked...finally i attempted to run down the list and try each COM port...9 is the one that worked for me...so i guess try that and see what happens
