Why don't you just go with the guys at Full Function. They can tune the Xede IIRC, and they have worked with 4g63s forever.

Better than throwing away the Xede, plus Works doesn't have a dyno to tune the cams with and it still doesn't have dual maps.

There are a few reasons to go with Works:
  • Pete has successfully supported a number of racers, and is very collaborative in his approach. This is important when you're spending big $$$ to show up to an event and want to know ALL of the trade-offs your making between pace and reliability
  • They're 10 minutes from my office and have access to a local dyno now, so I can have them do a baseline for me without missing work. Works is also moving to Sears Point, so when I do the test day(s) to set up my suspension they can come out at the same time and do trackside fine tuning under race conditions.

I'll miss being able to run two maps, but I'll just deal. Race gas was going to be a huge PITA to get out to Newfoundland anyway.

It will suck to have to eat the money I've put into the Xede. I've given Shiv 3 hours of dyno time plus 2.5 hours of labor I'll never see again, regardless of whether I proceed with the parts or not. I'll then have to try to recoup the cost of the Xede, SMART, and Evo IX harness.

I'm torn, but I can't deal with the "what-ifs" any more. I need to work with someone who respects my schedule and will work with me to make things right before I risk my own *** racing the car.

Sounds very frustrating - Hopefully it gets worked out - a lot of us are simply looking forward to reading the daily blogs on the Rally

are you sure you want to go with works...here is a thread by norcal evo and they have bascially panned their tunes (knock events at higher RPMs). Perhaps you should reconsider?

All I can say is shiv is an excellent tuner... I wouldn't go to someone who you do not trust and spend money then regret it.. I would just try to work with each others schedules and figure it out.. If not send a friend or brother or something to get it tuned while you work

I didn't mean this to devolve into a Tuner X vs Tuner Y argument, but here's some food for thought...

When I raced my M3, I worked with three different tuners at various points while my car evolved. They ranged from the most well known BMW tuner down to a local tuner barely known in the community. While researching them, all 3 had armies of people who both LOVED them and equal numbers of people who thought that they were BS artists trying to bilk you out of your money. What I have learned is that there is a bit of truth in it all, and it will always come down to your personal experiences.

Unfortunately my experiences with Shiv have been far from stellar. He appears to be a very bright guy who really knows his stuff, but he has also been difficult to work with and to communicate with, and I have felt that he was unwilling to work through issues with me the first time I brought my car to him, and then began to work through the issues with me on my second visit only after putting pressure on him. This is all obviously compunded by the fact that he's in high demand, but regardless of that customer service is not his strong point.

At the end of the day, Shiv's tune could end up being the most killer set-up I could ask for. There are more than a few of you who post on these boards that certainly believe so, which is why I made the investment in the first place. But at what price?

As a racer and as the guy responsible for both building and racing my car, I care about a few things above all else:
  • A willingness to collaborate -- I want someone who is going to help me understand their approach to tuning, the available tradeoffs, and what it is I'm trying to accomplish with the car. Even though I may not be a tuning expert, I do understand a thing or two about the car and I need to understand and have input into how things will be done.
  • Commitment to results -- Someone who will work with me to get the job done. In my case, time is at a premium and the back-and-forth is not something I can absorb very easily. I need someone who will buckle down and work through any issues with me until their resolved, so that we can move on to the next challenge.
  • Long-term support -- I expect to continually evolve this car, meaning it will be tuned, and re-tuned, and fine tuned as we go. Even whatever I end up with for Targa will be changed once we set up the car for road racing, and then reprogrammed for enduros. I need a tuner who will make themselves available and take the time to work with me.
Racing requires a partnership, even if the relationship is just vendor/customer. I was able to find that when building and racing the M3 (with both sponsors and vendors), and I'm still looking for it with the Evo. Maybe that's Works, or maybe it's just sucking it up and going to a full-blown engine management system like a Pectel or a Motec with a pro-level tuner like Hasselgren.

I'm hoping to have this resolved in the next couple of weeks regardless. The car goes for it's cage on February 12th. It needs to be ready to be back on track for testing the first weekend in March and -- if possible -- ready to go to Mexico in April for a one-off tarmac rally just over the border from San Antonio.

Peter g....I ditto every comment you made here. What you are describing is something I would love to have in every car/tuner transaction but I have not been satisfied 100%. Best luck to you wherever you go....lurk the norcalevo.net website and look for some quality tuners. I am a socal person and have no affiliation with with any tuner up north but you may want to avoid Works and Gruppe-S. Good luck!
