CA Tax Increase?

So for those of you living in CA you know by now that the sales tax, as well as the liscense, and registration fees are going up April 1st. I am, unfortunately, not able to buy my car (first evo) until the end of April. So instead of buying my car here and paying out the *** for sales tax and registration fees, I thought I might head up to Oregon to visit family and at the same time buy my evo there (there is no sales tax in Oregon).
The way I see it I would save myself the 8% sales tax and only end up paying a few hundred to have the car registered here and for plates.
Am I missing something or is this a great idea?
The only down side I can see is that I couldn't go to South Coast which seems like the place to go for an evo.

you might want to compare the evo prices from south coast and oreon evo prices. you miht end up saving anyways if you get it below value of the car here and still end up well vice paying value price plus gas to come back. you knw what i mean?

true...did you get your evo from sc? Will they give me a good deal? I feel like with the economy effed up and nobody buying cars these days, they are probably going to want to make any sale they can. Also I've checked south coast online pricing and it seems kinda...off. Like two '06, one with 7k and the other with 30k and the latter is priced higher that the former. It doesn't make sense. I have also heard that "only suckers pay sticker price at SC" Is that true?

If you are still registering the car in CA, you will have to pay the difference of the tax when you go to DMV to register the car. In your case since you are buying in Oregon, you will have to pay the full tax anyways. I bought a used RSX in MA and then drove to CA about 6 months later and still had to pay the difference between the taxes when I transfered reg. MA was 5% so I had to pay the remaining tax rate (7.75% - 5.00%= 2.75%). They give you about a year of ownership until you are no longer liable in paying the tax here.

If you can, get the car registered in Oregon then wait a year to transfer reg and plates if you really want to save money. You will actually lose money in driving up there then just drive back down and pay the same tax and registration anyways.

Solution go visit family get oregon license buy in oregon which will come with a four year OR reg for like 150 bucks then you also don't have to worry bout inspection.
Me and mywife both carry OR license Registration and then insure in CA with no problems.

Don't know where your goin to but Eugene Mits had 3 evo x's just chillin on the lot when we bought her 09 ES

Just a thought

If anyone asks just say your goin to school or some bs and the license and reg will have a spot for one time mailing address so you can get everything sent to your REAL home...lol

My family owns a business in Bend so I have a car reg'd there. It's a catch 22 with Cali emissions as you are not allowed to import any new cars that are federal emissions (if the evo is a 50 states car, then you can pay up and reg it here any time you want, otherwise it is considered a new car until it has 7500 miles on it).

I don't think you have to pay sales tax on a used car already in your name. I may "bring" my federal emissions vette to CA when I get 7500 miles on it too. It's an awkward situation and CA will hammer you if they catch you. They will make you pay for the year you drove free plus penalties on the reg unless you can work an angle like a company car or you aren't actually keeping it in CA full time.

Also consider that if you have a 2nd car in another state, you don't get a multi car discount on insurance since you have to carry a separate policy.

I bought an '08 GSR from South Coast on 3/31. The best sales experience I ever had. I would highly recommend them to anyone. As for buying an Evo from outside California, I suggest you just register the vehicle in Oregon. I believe someone already mentioned, you will definitely have to pay the tax difference at the DMV when registering here. Been there, done that.
