Also, funny story for you fellas:

I was driving home from south jordan and was heading north on I-15, taking the fun "S-turn" for the 9th south offramp. I was driving aggressively when I a pretty nice looking 07 black m3 pulled up next to me. We both cruised for a bit... He wasn't able to keep with me on the S turn but the straights were dead even. No honks, no racing, just both driving fast near one another. It was fun. After a bit more goofin' around he asked me to pull over at the sears on state and 8th south. He came over and shook my hand and said, "You should be in my car crew, holmes!" He went on to say they have a few evo's in the crew already. They are calling themselves "vicious." I politely explained I was barely getting the car running the way I'd like, and although I appreciated the offer I'd likely just stick to zippin' around with my buddies from time to time.

I thought it was kinda silly as the guy was probably 10 years younger than me (at least), but it was cool that he was still nice enough to wanna talk cars for a sec. Anyway...

Why wouldn't you want to control boost with the ecu, or monitor it with the ecu? It's really easy to do with the stock ecu and a JDM or other boost sensor and the free tuning stuff.

If you've tuned with the AP, it really won't be hard to tune with something like evoscan and openecu. Did you read that big long .pdf that was just released with pretty much everything evo tuning related in it? It's good stuff, I can send you a copy if you want.

I did not read it, but would love a copy. Also, I should clarify: I can control boost via ECU, it will just be done via adjustment of the wgdc and boost load tables via accesstuner. I just need to install the 3port ecbs. I just don't know of a way to install a jdm or evo X map sensor, patch the rom, and then reconfigure the accesstuner race software to recognize the changes. That's what I should have said. It's starting to look more and more like I'll just need to ditch the AP. Oh well, its been a good run I guess.

Well it's up to you, but if it were me, I'd sell the AP and stuff, use the money to buy some more stuff for the evo and tune with evoscan/openecu. But that's just my opinion. If you're really attached to AP there might be someone else around that could help you with your tuning goals. I'll hit you up with a link to that doc when I get home.

I'd be willing to pay regular tuning rates but I want to learn this for myself, not watch you get all the ladies.

I'm presently using the Cobb AccessPORT and Accesstuner street software. I've taken a look at the free alternatives and it seems as though many of the same options are there for tuning (so long as I'm not looking at ecu controlled boost, or monitoring boost via ecu etc). I'm not opposed to switching off the AP and software, it was simply a tool and a learning experience for me.

It shouldn't be too challenging. I've read and re-read the the tuning threads, and I think I have a healthy understanding of the fundamentals. I just need some hand holding at first to ensure I'm not blowing my shiz up.
If you need any help with the Opensource stuff, ecuflash or patches, I can get you pointed in the right direction...Just let me know, this **** works way too good for people to not be using it.

There is a bit of a learning curve involved with the patches, figuring out what works with what, Especially if you start playing with the Live Map/DMA patch.

Just start with the simple stuff & progress as you feel comfortable with things.

In the end, you will wonder why you even bought that Access-Port

Speaking of which, I'd like to meet up with you someday and get you to help me for a bit with my ECU. Do you work for beer?

I
At this point, I'm not married to the AP. I think all I would need to get up and running with the open source solutions would be a tactrix cable... I think. Looking more and more like its time to buy the jdm map sensor and tactrix cable and stop trying to square peg the round hole thingy. Thanks for the input guys.

haha its just the beginning and I'm wondering why I bought it. I got it for a relatively good deal and kept the base tune on it for over a year and was happy though, so I feel like I still got my money's worth out of it. The AP with its base tune on it was significantly cheaper than a custom tune for my otherwise stock evo. I don't think I'd do it again, but I also don't think I regret it too much either.

My plan will be to start with the simple stuff:
ecu logging boost, wideband sensor wired back into the ecu as well, this should give me a good place to start logging and seeing what she's up to.

Just a reminder,Lap Battle is only a few days away... We only have about 8 spots left for Saturday, so don't wait and miss your change to enter Lap Battle.

Also, we are holding an open track day on Sunday. It is the absolute cheapest way to get out on track at MMP. Only $125 for the single day, or if you sign up for Saturday's Lap Battle, Sunday is only $75!!!

What Wideband?

Those patches are good to start with & relatively simple. You will need to have the rear O2 sim in place to log the wideband through the ECU as it uses the rear O2 ADC channel, keep in mind that there will be a slight delay in the readings.

I've been having a guy here locally help me get my car running and lately if I don't owe him any money he won't return a phone call or even simply respond to a text and let me know whats up...apparently he has sent my old turbo to FP and they said that due to the age of the turbo they couldn't rebuild it and I would have to buy new...ok...new is good...but I have now been waiting over three weeks and I can't even get a response and I'm tired of waiting...so...does anyone know where or does anyone have a complete EVO IX turbo setup for-sale...
