Utah Evos
with no exp, im more nervous about tuning my car myself... So im really keeping options open. Plus i just got a new job so i could probably do both, the simple for now and the fully tuned system in the car once i get the car complete...
The obvious advantages of EcuFlash over AP are:
Cheaper.
More extensive.
Opensource, fully editable. Did I say Opensource?
Despite what the Vendor said, EcuFLash has way more options than AP ever had or ever will have, no informed mind will argue that AND if they are contending that premise, they obviuously don't read the EcuFlash Forum on this site; the options are virtually limitless.
More reasonably priced tuning options available, if you're not a self tuner.
You want custom-tuned maps? You either pay someone, who forwards you the tuned maps to upload to the AP via YOUR COMPUTER, or get a laptop and edit them yourself, in which case, the EcuFlash interface is LIGHT YEARS easier to understand and use and is fully editable, as editing the AccessECU Language is firmly limited to the corporate and monetary structure of COBB Tuning, for which technical, programming and customer support is either limited or virtually non-existant.
As mentioned above, it is REQUIRED to have a laptop (or computer) to custom edit .ptm's for the AP, so either way (EcuFlash or AP), you need a laptop.
No prepackaged map, or second hand map is custom tuned for your car. Similar mods? Sure, every car is different, though. There are too many variables to discuss why you should always have a specific tune for your specific vehicle, not someone's second hand tune. Passing on a custom tuned map to a customer (for instance: someone who is buying a AP and whatever tune is included with it) from the vehicle it was tuned for, to the customer's car, BY DEFAULT, makes it a canned tune. No two cars, no two set of environmental variables are the same. Mitsubishi includes a canned tune for every Evo it sells. We all know how good canned tunes are.
The one and only advantage the AP has over EcuFlash is that it is a mass storage, hand held reflashing device. Did, I mention it fits in your hand? Yeah, that's the one advantage. I'll take my laptop with the refined and FREE EcuFlash with the limitless options, thank you very much.

But honestly, I think I'm at the limit of the factory ECU. I love my plug and play AEM for my 240 and that might be my next upgrade for the EVO.
I didn't even want to waste my time typing all of what Booster did so thank you Jason
I'm sorry but I think ap is a major fail! Stock ecu is pretty awesome these days even big tuners like Buschur is going back to them with all of the options available now...can't wait till the acd computers are getting reflashed by opensource
I'd love a ems but right now that's not on the menu
a new motor in my car first

I have too much money invested in this contraption to become one of the pioneers pushing the limits of the stock ecu. I should be somewhere in the low to mid 600s on E85, and I need to achieve that as safely and accurately as possible.

I win!
Do you know how many thousands of hours go into tuning the stock ECU, just for the stock calibration. You will never have the same drivability with any other setup! After the stock ECU the next best option is AEM's EMS, and then you're only as good as your tuner.
