Custom Cold Air Intake (temporary)

Just for fun, since i'm going to the track tonight to try and better my best time, i decided to see if it makes a difference having the filter draw air further from the engine. I'm pretty convinced the short ram sucks in a enough hot air that it actually degrades performance, even with the snorkel. So anyways, since i'm still waiting on shop time to finish the manifold and downpipe for my turbo, i figured i'd have some fun with my intercooler piping, lol...took about 10 minutes.

It does feel like it pulls better in the afternoon heat, and when it's cold in the evening, it really wakes up. It is also louder, and makes a wicked crack when MIVEC engages. And obviously it's temporary, as the filter is in a really bad spot, lol

Here's how it looks, i'll let you guys know how i do at the track.

+1

I was thinking about hydro-locking when I saw how low it was.

no, lol...if i decided to keep it on till the turbo is finished, i would look at way to protect it from hydro lock.

It doesn't look like it's going to rain today, and i was planning on taking it off tonight after the track anyways.

not sure what that is, but if i decide to keep it on, i would at least mount the filter higher, and put all the splash guards back on, i don't really want to spend money making it safe, it's more experimental, to see if it performs better then the SRI alone, which i'm sure it does, but the 1/4 mile will be the judge of that. I figured since this could be my last 1/4 mile of the season i may as well give it whirl since i had a box full of 2.5" aluminum pipe laying around

If you could find an AEM bypass second hand you would be set. No use buying one new if you won't use it with the turbo.

^ He took it out. Look at his post above.

It's not permanent, and if it were, a hydro-shield wouldn't prevent hydrolock with the filter as low as it is. He would definitely need a bypass valve.

He said it was not permanent which is why I only suggested a "hydrosheild at least" and it acts as a prefilter not to mention is less than half of a bypass valve. And having that bypass valve once, he goes turbo would be useless since it can't be used any longer.

I haven't ever gotten hydrolock only heard of people getting scared of it on here and I have taken my cai through hurricane flooded roads as long as your front end doesn't become submerged (which it never should) you will be fine.

My bad. I have a bad habit of just skimming through posts and not actually reading all the info posted. Lol

Hey Garrett, do you have an extra piece of tubing that I could buy from you... I need a 90 degree peice big enough to replace the oem rubber one that comes off the tb.

Rob, i only have that little one in the pic that goes past the battery, it's too small, and i have another than is 90 degree but has 12" legs...that and i'll be needing these for the turbo, and also i'm no longer in Borden, i'm posted to trenton permanently for the next few years So, i'll have to make road trips if you're in a major pickle and need a hand with anything, sorry man.

Oh, and i got a new personal best 1/4 mile ET, my best prior, was 15.67s at 87.9mph. My best reaction was .507s, and that ended with a 15.633s @ 89.99mph. My average is about .6 seconds.

Tonight, my best two were:
15.499s @ 89.47mph
15.530s @ 90.52mph

my top speed was 91.07mph, but took 15.79s...I was trying different ways of launching, and shifting and found dumping the clutch and letting the LSD take care of the rest was the best method, and my fastest times were while shifting into 2nd around 5500-6000, and the rest of the gears at around 7000rpm. I actually chirped going into 3rd, never done that before, lol.

thats a decent improvement for just moving the filter out of the engine bay. good stuff!

trenton huh... that's sorta ghey. lol i'm not in a bind, i just have an intake coming and would like to eliminate the rubber/plastic elbow with an alluminum peice. no big deal. i can find something somewhere around here.
