I got a Sportback RA with some mods...My worst was 17mpg (AutoX track day)....average 23mpg....my best 26mpg (highway): it depends a lot on the driving style and staying out of Mivec range (+3500rpm) as much as possible. Our 2.4L Mivec motor loves to drink gas...almost like a small V6-V8!!!

Get an.....

Get an underdrive pulley from RRM. For myself, that has been the most successful improvement in MPG for my 2004 auto. RA!

Prius saves more?? Those things suck. A Diesel Volkswagen Lupo can get better mileage than a prius for the same amount of fuel. That and kids playing the street can't hear the Prius coming... grrrreat!
I've heard the K&N oval pod filter is a really beneficial for fuel economy and sounds great too

same here, in the city I get around 23-24 mpg "spirited" driving (maybe a little better because my drive to work doesn't see a lot of lights), and on the hwy I get around 28-29 mpg.

...My xr get's 18-19 mpg(city) but that's just way too hard to stay out of the boost

I get around 26 mpg as an average in my Sportback, but I do about 70% highway driving on a tank. If I do more city driving, especially with the A/C on, I get around 23 mpg. I've seen as low as 20 mpg if I drive it hard with the A/C on in town.

My car is stock except for the K&N filter and I don't usually drive it too hard, try to anticipate traffic lights, accelerate moderately, etc. I do use Amsoil synthetic oil, changed every 7500 miles and ATF, currently at 64k miles and no problems.

Fuel mileage is my only real complaint with this car, but at least it's got the power to back it up. For a four-cyl wagon with an autobox anyway. My 89 Acura Legend only had 160hp and it was a 2.7 V6!

If the autobox had another gear, mileage would probably be much better. Our 06 2.4 4 cyl Accord returns about 32 mpg on the highway at 70-75 mph. Almost the same horsepower in a much larger car, yet it has a 5 spd auto. At 75 mph, the Accord is turning 2600 rpm, my Sportback is turning 3100 rpm.

MPG depends almost fully on throttle position. so even if you shift low, you might be giving it more gas to get going, instead of reving higher with less throttle just leaving it the gear longer.

another thread was kind of about this, remember gas milage is not RPM based its throttle position. be easy on the gas!

I'm not so sure of that. I read that you can get better MPG out of a fuel injected car by shifting way early and flooring it to get going than going easy on the gas but revving higher. Because it's more about airflow than throttle position.

That old rule about pretending there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal only applies to carbureted cars, then.

Change ur air filter.

Keep it under MIVEC, so 3500 or less.

ya gas milage in the RA isnt exactly excellent however, it definitly could be a lot worse.
Question though how does and underdrive pully get you better gas mileage?

It decreases the load on the engine by a tiny bit, which increases your fuel economy a tiny bit.
