On pure performance the WRX is 1. When you throw in subjective items it all depends on what you like. Interior quality and exterior styling greatly sway sentiment.
The RA was in the mix, as all but the SI was a turbo car. Too bad Mitsu did not give the RA a manual. Or another 30-40 HP. They were critical of Subie as now the WRX is faster than the STI. Why pay $10k more for an STI they asked. I guess that is the same problem in upping the RA, it would get into Evo territory as far as straight line performance.
My list
1 WRX (sedan, to clear up confusion)
2 RA
3 SS
4 MS3 (hate wagons)
5 Clubman (too expensive)
6 SI
7 GTI (wagon and UGLY)

not ugly to me i love it............
drive it more then my evo.....
and i think the new body lancers and evo's are terrible looking....
VWs are great hatchbacks. Due to their shapes, and paint, their cars look much more substantial than other manufacturer's in their class. Very clean, purposeful, and well built. I convinced my friend to lease the new gen jettas when they got released, and I couldn't believe that they could offer such a nice interior for the price. It's an audi, without the cost. Great materials throughout. Also, both the jettas and the golfs/rabbits are surprisingly roomy. I don't know how the damn germans do it. Great vehicles, I just hate spinning front tires only
Oh, and blue, isn't that an R32? One thing that disappoints me is they got rid of the rain sensing wipers, and replaced the climate controls with some of the crappiest I've seen, as well as some other touches. It was bizarre how much just a few things added or subtracted to the perceived quality. They had to cut costs somewhere - it's a shame though.

So how is VW quality these days? The from the doors forward, the GTI looks good. If I were to get a VW I would get the Passat CC, nothing looks better for the money, both inside and out. I have no idea on quality though.
Good looking car man. I drove one this summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. Quality vehicle for the price.
Blue can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe it is. He mentioned a downpipe mod in his earlier post as well, and the R32 is naturally aspirated.

ya the passat is a nice car.....the quality is great some rattles here and there but like a bentley on the inside compared to my evo....

DSG. Liked it a lot, but was wishing it didn't upshift itself, and I still prefer column mounted paddles, I think. Little choppy in stop and go as well, until I fiddle with the transmission mode. Still, it pulled hard, felt sharp, sounded excellent, and had a great interior. If I wasn't commited to AWD, it'd be on my shortlist for the next car.

I wouldn't expect WRX performance, honestly. It should be quick, but the new WRX is putting up incredible 0-60 numbers for what it costs. Also, the GTI-R is probably going to be pretty expensive -- the R32 wasn't a cheap car.
Also, this:
Unfortunately, the R32 and its sonic V6 engine are being dropped due to EU emissions legislation. However, VW will, in spirit, bring it back via an all-wheel-drive R variant called GTI-R. It will be powered by the 265hp 2.0 TFSI found in the Audi S3.
