P183D code

SOS! I started to notice a not so good sound when going from 1st to 2nd gear but didn’t think much of it. Sure enough the next day “service transmission” light came up but was then replaced with the check engine light. Scanner threw the P183D code which is shift fork 2 malfunction. My question is, has anyone experienced this or something similar to it? It honestly sounds pretty god awful when it shifts and I know there are only a handful of shops that will even touch the SST transmissions. I live in Edmonton AB, does anyone know of any reputable shops near there? And what kind of damage I’d be taking financially? Any and all help is appreciated, I’m only at just over 170xxx km and I don’t want to part ways with my Ralliart but if the transmission is effed and not worth it then I’d have to consider other options. Please someone help!

Sounds like shift fork 2 has come loose or misaligned, pretty common, Mitsubishi replaced my transmission on warranty few years back, cause they won't even open them lol however there are some shops that work on them, not sure about near you but there is one near me in Barrie ON most reputable would be Kozmic(Texas) or Jack's trans(I've heard mixed reviews of Jack's though), I've also seen some decently priced transmissions for sale but you would still need to get it married to your car(electronically the TCU won't communicate with it properly otherwise)... Also Dodson makes a sick replacement shift fork so this doesn't happen again.

Good luck

@RalliFast That’s what I was afraid of. I found one shop in the city (I’m in Edmonton,AB) but he quoted me $7k 🙃 So like.. no thanks lol. I’d be better off buying a beater at this point. I was also quoted $850 for a tranny flush? Does that sound right? And do you know if that would even do anything? Thanks for the recommendations but all those shops are a bit far for me lol, especially Texas. Any idea on how long I’ve got before the transmission completely ****s the bed or hard to say? Thanks so much for your reply!

That sounds about right for a flush the fluid is rather expensive and if you do it properly you have to do a run through of I think its mineral spirits... Don't quote me on mineral spirits but I highly doubt that would fix it... Usually what happens is the little magnet on the end of the shift fork which is held on by basically glue 🙄 becomes dislodged or moves enough to be misaligned(it's very specific) and won't recognize the gears properly for 2nd and 4th for shift fork 2 I'm not sure how much damage you might do continuing to drive it but it will go into limp mode constantly. I would hate to lose my car like that, maybe talk to the shop near you and say if it's just the shift fork that needs to be fixed how much, might be less but they are specialized transmissions, I still heavily recommend the Dodson replacement fork, the magnet is mechanically attached instead of an adhesive.

That’s stupid expensive lol I’m glad I didn’t go through with it. As for the shift fork I did tell the guy who quoted me $7k the code I got and that it was just a shift fork. I could always try again and see what he says? Just seems like a lot to replace ONE piece but I know these transmissions are a pain from what I’ve read. That sounds super sketchy tho especially if I’m on a highway. I haven’t even paid the damn thing off and cars are crazy expensive right now so I’m in quite the pickle. Thanks, I’ll check it out!

You can watch YouTube videos about our transmissions DCT-470, you'll understand why it's so expensive, when you fix it you have to get everything right or it just spits out metal chunks, Kozmic can make them damn near bullet proof but you have to take out the transmission and ship it to them.

Let me know if you sell it.

Will do! I mean just the fact that only a handful of shops will even touch it says a lot lol. But 7k for a shift fork? Do you know how much it would cost me if I did ship it to Kozmic and have them do it?

I will! I went to a dealership and didn’t even tell them about the transmission and they said they’d give me $2500 😂 Even if I sell privately I’m not sure anyone would even want it given the issue with the transmission

Well the 7k is about knowing how to open it, fix it and put it back together properly there's a heavy "you couldn't do it" fee... Kozmic would likely be more since they are in the states but worth a call maybe they would be sympathetic and cut you a break... However you still have to have the transmission taken out, shipped to Texas I believe but Kozmic sends you a super duper transmission box to ship it in.

People who like these cars or an Evo X owner who need a spare motor will buy it, at a discount surely with the transmission issue but the motor alone is worth a couple grand. I'm thinking about it for my nephew he's such a car nut.
