How to Launch
How to Launch
I have a question...
I just gone thru my OEM Stock clutch and I am going to get a stage 2 4-puck ceramic clutch by exedy.
Here are the list of my mods i have right now...
Upper and lower IC pipes (2.75" Diameter)
Hybrid Development FMIC (3.00" diameter hotside/coldside outlet)
MBC set at 19 psi
Walbro 255 fuel pump
3" megan racing dp
3" test pipe
3" Jun B.L. Exhaust
k/n cone filter adapter
How I launched it before, this was from my stock clutch... I rev it up to 3500 then i just feather and gas it at the same time... i do pretty consistent launches from that method... but i noticed that some of the people with aftermarket clutches launches at 6000 rpm and they feather it also?? I tried to launch my car with the stock clutch at 5000 rpm before and i feathered it like i did before but the car bogged.
so what is the right way to launch your evo with a aftermarket clutch... I know for a fact that this stage 2 clutch is very different from the OEM clutch... or should i just stick with my old method in holding it at 3500 rpm then feather the clutch until i feel it grab then gas it / dump clutch at the same time.

i have a tilton cermaltic clutch and what i do is rev to about 6500 and let the clutch out till i feel it start to grab and once the green light hits i side step the clutch and let it go...thou i have anti lag to launch with but i hope that helps...

BigBallin - he has an 03, they do not have the stock 5000 2step as the 05+ do.
No flash? Get a flash - or the EcuFlash then you can program the 2step yourself. And 3500 is way way too low to launch an Evo. You were just eatting up the clutch. What did you run (60' and 1/4 et doing that?) Guessing 2.2-2.4 60' - mid-high 13s?
Advance Search - launching posted by Warrtalon for the 6000 quick slip or here is my tech. w/2step.
At the lights use shallow stage. This means as soon as you engage the 1st amber, slowly roll into the 2nd amber. As soon as that is lit, stop. ((This gives you a few extra inches to get it moving before the timers come on.))
Clutch in, gas to the floor, bouncing off 2step. Walk the clutch out a little bit just to the point that you feel all the slack coming out of it. Almost to the point of moving the car - hold it right there.
Amber, amber, green --- walk the clutch back fast but not dumping. Hold on for dear life and you are off and running (of course go before you see green - its all in the timing).
When done right it feels like all 4 are spinning and you are going like a bat-outta-hell.

yea. i was too skurred to launch at 6000 but you guys think its good to do it at that range.
so i should just rev up to 6k and feather the clutch and while i feel it grab, then i floor the gas, let go of the clutch pedal correct?
i am getting my ecu flashed, and i wanted to get that 2 step for my car. but that wont happen after i get all of my parts i want installed in the car.

By the way, that clutch is cerametallic, not ceramc - HUGE difference. I don't think there is such a thing as a ceramic clutch anyway. Also, there is no such thing as "launching" from 3500 rpm. That is not a launch at all, and it requires an assload of slipping the clutch, which probably led to the stock clutch's demise. YOu won't be able to do that anyway with the 4-puck, because it is extremely grabby. Do as others have said and get those revs up around 6k, then do the quick slip method. Once you're moving, the shifts should be seamless. Once I got my 4-puck, I was able to no-lift-shift every gear with ease. I have a vid posted either here in this forum or in the parts review forum where I reviewed this clutch, so search for threads I've started.
thanks for the info.. what is included in the basic flash mail-in from Al?
does that help make the car run alot smoother with added HP? how much more HP are we talking about??

What is included?? Tuning...(and features like launch control, raised rev limiter, removal of fuel cut, etc).
Yes, it smooths out the powerband (stock tune is sucky), and it adds a guaranteed 20whp (sometimes more).

well, from my experince, i have an evo IX MR, and at first it has rev lock at 5500, i just tap it hard as possible, and do a double SLIP, half way then let it grab and drop it, and launch like that guy said "bat outta hell" from my experince with rolls, dont do it, racing from rolls is bad unless u have an evo that can break traction at 40mph
