I have no answers - just some data for what its worth

Today I ran across a car which was not running properly, it was running overly rich for the mods it had and no amount of tuning coulkd correct the imabalance

After a while I thought to check the MAF sensor to see if it had any contamination which could be effecting the reading

What I discovered was that large amounts of dirt had been getting through the HKS RS foam filter and the intake tube and MAF sensor both were caked with dirt and oil

This car had 26,000 miles

HKS RS is known for bad filtration. It lets thru a lot of air but also a lot of debris. I think keeping the stock airbox with a drop in filter is the best idea especially if you occasionally do some rally driving.

 

wow thats terrible, i would want a refund! i bet it suggest changing the filter every 3k miles though, so if that guy had the same filter for 26k its probably his own fualt.

The filter picks up the small stuff but the sand goes right through.

Just change the oil more often, the crankcase is where it all ends up in the end. The thought of the crud hittling the blades of the turbo worries me though.

 

A few extra hp over a drop in filter at the expense of that is not worth it!

 

I have had an HKS intake on my car forever and change out the filter every couple thousand. Mine has never looked like that and I constantly take off the filter and check things out. I will take some pictures and post them today.

 

The best filter on the market is the Apex. It filters out much more debris than the HKS and suprisingly makes more power.

 

what about the BLITZ SUS filter

 

This is just the theory that I had, everyone here in Tucson was complaining that the HKS RS filter hurts you more than actually help.

This filter is simply too pourous, it allows too much air to go in unfortunately it compromises the main funtion which is retaining the dirt. This filter allows too much air but also too much dirt.

This filter is highly NOT recommendable if you live in a desertic area like Tucson.

Keep in mind for what its worth that this car was being tuned in LA which has a lot of dust

I would prefer a K & N style cone filter such as the Buschur, Injen, AMS, Helix, etc

The HKS RS makes great power but is not good in dusty loactions

 

you are supposed to change filters with your oil

 

HKS has several types of filter elements that fit the RS mushroom head.

There's the green type which comes with an HKS "Super Power Flow" filters a lot more than the yellow stuff that comes with the "Racing Suction Kit" - or the RS kit. The yellow stuff filters out insects and perhaps rocks.

Just to make things complicated, they do dry type also and they come in all sorts of colours. There's the 2-layer type and a 3-layer type. I actually have a 3 layer filter for my Subaru, but haven't installed it yet having found out the hard way that the yellow stuff doesn't actually filter. (I'm running stock intake on the subie at the moment).

I am starting to see more and more MAF sensors getting oiled and dirty on evos

Perhaps a oil catch can could also help
