That's basically what the above is doing (through some awful scaling wrangling), so yes.

Are you thinking something along the lines of a "skip=X" parameter to go along with the scaling? (ie. something like <table name="blah" elements="16" scaling="hex8", skip="1">...</table> which would skip every other element, or skip="2" which would skip two elements for every one displayed, etc)? Is something like that already available?

 

mixmastermatt posted a table a long while back that does not have the FFFF values. I think it may be in Jack_of_Trades MUT table post.
