Built 2.4L start up problems
Built 2.4L start up problems
Having some issues with getting my new 2.4L build started for the first time.
Here are the relevant mods (I think, ask if I missed something):
* 100mm crank
* 150mm manley rods
* 9.5:1 wiseco pistons
* Evo 9 mivec head
* S2 cams
* standard size gsc valves
*stock Evo injectors (had some PTE 1000s in it but we switched them out in the process of trying to figure out why it won't start)
* stock MAF.
I am getting spark and fuel. Going to check compression tonight (it sounds like it has compression, and it's a ***** to turn by hand, but I'll get numbers tonight), so I'll report back. A local guy who runs these motors timed it originally (had to re-time it when I replaced the crank trigger plate) and he marked the belt and swears up and down that they're supposed to be 1/2 tooth retarded, so I took his word, and timed it up again based on his marks and that is definitely how it is timed now.
Exhaust cam sensor is new & functioning, and I am 99% sure that cam trigger plate thing is in right (at tdc, the larger tooth is at around 4-5 o'clock if you're looking at it from the drivers side of the car. The intake cam sensor isn't throwing any codes, so I assume it's okay. The car isn't throwing any codes at all, actually.
All the sensors are hooked up, battery is new. It logs fine (based on my limited knowledge) and it sounds like it wants to start, but it just won't. The tuner swears up and down that it isn't the tune, but at this point I don't really know what else it could be. And he doesn't really have a whole lot of experience with these 2.4 builds in particular, to my knowledge he's only tuned one other car with it.
I have no idea what is wrong, or even what to look at at this point. So any suggestions would be awesome. Or, if there is anything specifically in the tune that I should look at?
Thanks in advance!

Haha xD Well, I did a compression test, and either the machine shop installed something wrong in the head, or it was timed wrong at some point. My compression (going from #1 to #4) 130, 30, 0 and 0
They probably aren't exact numbers, I was doing it myself, and it was a fairly cheap gauge, so it probably leaked a little by the time I got to the engine bay to check, but either way, something's ****ed.
I was doing a leak down and pretty sure I was doing something wrong, cause #1 was showing 100% leak, and was hella loud out the exhaust. Gonna try and get someone to come over tomorrow and help me, since apparently I'm retarded haha xD

So I have been talking to one of the local guys, and he thinks it is the belt (either on wrong, or it's the wrong one). Does anyone know any reliable information about timing the 4g64 bottom end with an Evo 9 head? Mostly like what the timing should look like, what the vvt exhaust cam gear should look like and what belt to use?
Thanks for the help!

Use the 4g63 belt, just set them retarded half a tooth and go from there. Tho if you have that kinda compression in one cylinder, and essentially nill on the others....I'd guess it's time for a valvejob.
There's nothing really special about the 2.4 over the 2.0, everyone is just afraid of something different. A car that ran perfect on a 2.0 tune, will still start and run(driving wise...WOT no so much) just fine with a 2.4. The timing isn't rocket science. There's a good thread in the drivetrain section about building 2.4's. It wouldn't be anywhere near as long if people would actually read and comprehend it before asking the same questions 25 times, but it's still useful.

Well it's stupid, because the head is all brand new, which means the valves are all brand new. I'm gonna make sure the valves are bent, replace them and then degree the cams like should have been done in the first place.
