I talked to Shiv today about this. He offered up the following: So long as I'm using the stock turbo, all the afore-mentioned cam combo's are going to feel about the same. If I plan to upgrade to a larger turbo in the future I should go with the 272/272. For a stock turbo his favorite would be the 264/272.

Then again, I have a friend running the 264/272 and regrets not going 272/272, and tells me that if I get the 272/272 and don't like it he'd happily trade me his 264 for it. Too many opinions, what to do what to do?

Sam

I went through the same vacillation before I finally opted for the 272 set. If you aren't going to get cam gears and/or you aren't going to mod the car to close to the turbo's limits, I'd probably suggest the 264/272 or even 264 set.

I'm for sure doing the cam gears, I implied as much when I said Vishnu stage 1+. I figure that at stage one I'll be doing the cam gears, while I'm at it I might as well do the cams too. Have you put the cams in? If so, what can you share with me regarding your impressions of the 272/272 setup?

Thanks,
Sam

I do have the gears, and I've dyno tested two cam timing configurations. I am very pleased with the power I'm getting from the 272/272 setup, and I wouldn't change anything where the cams are concerned. Shiv likes the cams set up at -3/-3, and I do as well. The idle has a nice little rumpity rump, which sounds nice if you like that sort of thing. If you go to -4/-1.5, you get a little later spool, slightly better peak power, and a stock-like idle.

What did the dyno numbers tell you? Does the lopey idle affect driving quality as well? In other words, will the wife stall the car much easier? I'd love to see or hear dyno numbers and time slips.

Thanks,
Sam

I've heard that 272/264 setups also have a 'different' sort of idle. Is it the same lope as 272s, or what? Can you dial it out with gears in pretty much the same way?

I don't have the exact data but this has also been discussed at Buschur, below is the link so I hope it helps a little bit.

You can always reduce overlap, but you cannot add it. The 272 set will have the most lope at idle when both cams are set on the same lobe centers, although it's just a bit bumpy and not truly lopey. The 272/264 setup will be a bit smoother.

I have the HKS 264/264 set up and couldn't be happier. My power down low is MUCH better, and it pulls to the rev limiter without letting up at all. When the cams were freshly installed (no tuning) it had some lope to the idle, but never a stall or anything even close. Now, after my updated Dynoflash with the idle flash, the car idles almost exactly like stock (with a tiny tiny amount of lope). The power is simply amazing from them though!

Good luck!! Feel free to hit me up with questions.

No time slips - I don't really drag race. The attached dyno chart shows the HKS 272/272 cams set at -3/-3 (red), and then again at -4/-1.5 (blue). You can see how the setting with more overlap and lumpy idle comes on boost a bit quicker at the expense of a few hp up top. When you dial out a bit of overlap, the idle is smooth, the spool is delayed ~250rpm, and the peak numbers are slightly higher. These numbers are from a Dyno Dynamics dyno (reads very conservatively). This equates to ~355whp and ~310 ft/lbs on a Dynojet.

The chart is posted here:
