I had a guy last week, he lasted two days and quite.
I'm not down on this project. I am very concerned with it though.

The event is the 27th-28th of this month. We are ready I guess. The car has one more change that is going to take place next week and then I am going to run it at the track again next week.
The way the car stands now it is absolutely a blast to drive. I have been driving it everyday and took it down to Mid-Ohio last week and met up with Larry Webster from Car and Driver magazine. We did some work on his MR and I was going down there to see if I could be of further help with the car. He was very shocked to see me out just driving the car around this close to the competition. I figure if it is going to break it may as well do it before the day of the competition.
I have had it to the track multiple times since our April 15th race. It has run a couple of 11's, best of 11.79 at 116 mph. Normally it is running 12.0's at 116 as it is very hard for me to launch, I either come out too hard spinning all four tires or a little to easy and bog it.
The car is running the stock turbo still. As I said, there is one more change going to take place between now and the event.
This Wednesday I ran the car on some 93 octane I picked up while down at Mid Ohio. I was curious to see how it would run on that fuel compared to the wicked 94 we get here locally. Definite difference in the knock count. I had to make a new tune for the car which I left in the EMS for the event. The car still ran a 12.05 at 114.88 mph.
These StopTech brakes we are running are just retarded. Unbelievable braking from the car, the lack of ABS is probably going to hurt us though. Around town as you come closer to a stop you actually have to lift OFF the brake pedal or you end up stopping short of where you wanted to be. The hotter they get the better they get.
Also, as you guys can see I hired Nick Ryan, he's made things much easier here on the phones. Thanks Nick
I sent in my list of parts, to Car and Driver, that have been added to the car. It's amazing how quickly you can sink a ton of money into a project.

The time has come. Down to the wire. Leaving Sunday for the event and Monday and Tuesday are the days. (6-27 and 6-28-05)
We have put an unbelievable amount of time and effort (and money) into this project. I want to review what we have done now, for those interested, as we have been asked to be quiet about the event after it is over. They put a lot of effort into organizing this and don't want to be "scooped" on their own story. Understandable.
Hands down the majority of the vote has been for an unlimited budget build. That was not what I wanted to do. As time went on I found myself changing my mind on different parts and trying things I didn't think I would. I spent more money on some parts than I ever thought I would and less on parts that I thought would be priority.
The RS ended up with 450 dyno pulls on it since last fall. We pulled the engine and head and freshened them up. Ported the head, forged pistons/rods etc. Our Stage 3 parts. The engine went immediately onto the dyno and was flogged for all it was worth. First oil change we always cut the oil filter open to see how the engine is wearing and get an idea of what can be expected. There were some very very small flakes of bearing material in the filter. You will see this many times with the very outer layer of material flaking and other unimportant reasons.
Anyway, been just driving and beating the hell out of the car. I took it to Mid Ohio to meet up with Larry Webster from C&D a few weeks ago. He seemed shocked that the car I was entering in the shootout was the one I had driven there. He said it isn't normal
I told him, "Hey, if it breaks we'll fix it, that's what we do."
Two weeks ago we were working on our last major change on the car. When it went on the lift Daniel (my brother and owner of our service department) talked and decided to pull the oil filter off and do an oil change. We also decided that when we cut the filter this time if ANYTHING was inside we'd pull the engine, just to be safe for the event. Well as luck would have it there was again, very very small pieces of silver in the filter. 3 days of work and the car was back together with a fresh shortblock, same cylinder head.
The old engine was taken apart, nothing. Unbelievable how well the engine was wearing. 30 psi of boost on a daily basis ON 94 OCTANE, 8500 rev limiter. This is how an engine is suppose to look inside, just beautiful. WTF?! We wasted the time to pull it and it is just perfect. I clean it up, and decide to just re-assemble it for a spare. As I am putting it back together I find one main bearing that has a very narrow "scuff" in the center of it. Almost like there was a burr on the chamfered oil feel hole. This was the only part I could find that was even remotely questionable. I installed one new main bearing and put a set of fresh rings in it. It is ready to go back into something.
I decide this time instead of putting it right on a dyno (also since we sold our dyno and are waiting on our REAL dyno to show up) that I would drive this car easy for once and break it in slowly. Generally I run them like I am going to drive them, and that's hard.
I have been working on nothing but driveability and fuel mileage for over a week. Boost is as low as it will go.
Last night I decided I better go back to the dragstrip one last time. Just make sure the car is where it was, 12.0-12.2 and MPH atleast 114 mph. Pull to the line, decide to get mean with it and BAM!! WTF?! I pull to the side and limp the car down the track. Horrible crunching noises. Driveshaft sounds like it is hitting the exhaust. No visible damage. Call the shop have them bring a trailer. The car is sitting here now broken. Sometime today we'll get it in here and see what's going on. We have parts, so it isn't a problem
First thought was, "I'm doomed to fail at C&D". Second thought, and final thought was, "What a blessing, had this happened next Tuesday we wouldn't have even gotten one freaking run in."
This is the very first driveline failure we have personally had in any of our EVO's. The transfer case, which is what I think broke, was brand new, less than 90 miles on it. Very disturbing.
The car.
We went with a 50mm double adjustable DMS susension on the car. Upgraded rear sway bar, titanium front strut tower bar.
I have taken our normal approach to weight reduction on the car. The car was already an RS, so there is no sound deadener. The front and rear steel bumper supports are gone, our exhaust, battery kit etc. Air bags, door beams and any safety equipment are still instact and functional. We put a good stereo and speakers in the car, as it comes with none.
Tires, BFG KD's, wheels SSR Competitions.
Engine and head are BR Stage 3.
Power is BR complete Stage 4, BR throttle body and ported intake manifold, ported and ceramic coated turbine, 02 housing and 10.5 MR turbine housing. Turbo is a stock unit that has been only clipped. Tuning is the AEM EMS.
I custom mounted one single gauge in the car, came out sweet. The RS has no power mirros, so there is a blank spot there. I mounted the boost gauge in a modified mount there, looks exceptional.
Clutch is Exedy.
Braking is being handled with a 335 mm Stoptech big brake front kit. Stoptech has been unbelievable in their support. I was having some serious braking issues with the car, as the car has no ABS. The rears were locking up and throwing the car way out of balance. A phone call to Jeff and the next day the problem was handled with a simple brake pad change. Unbelievable.
I think if anything is going to hurt us it is going to be the lack of ABS on the car. The way the brakes feel to ME now I think Robert Fuller will be able to handle the car just fine.
I have dyno'd a bunch of turbos and the more work I do the more I find that if you are going to primarily run pump gas then the best turbo for the job is the stock one.
In the end what I ended up with is a fairly unlimited budget build with a stock turbo providing boost. The funny thing about the unlimited part is it still came down to powering the car with our own BR Stage 4 package.
I could have left a stock engine and head in the car, which I probably should have. The power gains are not worth the money spent on a shortblock and head with the stock turbo still on the car. I was worried about reliability more than anything and with the road course, 1/4 mile and sprint to 150 mph all being right in a row I went with some security and did them anyway. For a customer I wouldn't recommend it as the stock parts are very good. I am also running a lot of boost for pump gas and the forged pistons can take the abuse much better. As a side note I have put this exact tune in a couple of customers cars now and they are really pleased, so it is safe enough to be run by anyone.
For those of you wanting us to do well, think some good thoughts. For those of you wanting us to fail, don't think.
Take care all,
David Buschur

I'm sure you'll own everyone like usual. Good luck man. Oh btw, thanks for stuffing EVERY newspaper since 1985 in the box with my FMIC..haha. Once again good luck and thanks for all the parts, I'll buy some more tuesday just cause I'm a nice guy.
Nice write up Dave. I just got my short block with forged pistons and rods back along with my ported and polished head. I look forward to the article and hearing about how you did. Good luck, see you at DSM shootout
