High pitched noise at idle
Some Walbros will make a high pitched whine when it's hot outside. I wonder if the stock pump couldn't be doing the same thing. Your fuel pump is located under the black access port on the drivers side (under the back seat).

I'm still on the stock fuel pump and you (raman) and quickshifter are both using walbro's. I don't think it's the fuel pump. It may be the exhaust. If my exhaust ever gets shipped, I'll let you guys know.

Okay, I did take the car to the dealer and they told me it was a normal noise. Installed a catback exhaust and the sound is still there. I did some more research and it seems that some people can notice the whine of the stock pump. I'm going to be getting a custom flash here in the next few weeks and probably going to get a walbro so I'll let you guys know if I can still hear the sound after that. My car right now runs great, but I just didn't want to encounter a problem down the road with this. I did have an alarm installed after 1,000 miles on the car and I think this sound could be related to it somehow. Now I'm going to go make sure all the wiring is allright down there and see what I can come up with.

Update... Now with an HKS RS intake, Hallman mbc, HKS downpipe, Work HFC, HKS 30th anniv. catback, and MR DV... I'm still getting this whine at idle. I would say 80% of the time it is noticeable inside the cabin; even more so when standing right beside the drivers side back door. The car runs fine and I really don't want to go to the dealer with mods on. I will be doing a fuel pump install here within the next week and getting flashed next Thursday. I'm hoping it's just a noisey stock fuel pump. It is definately an electrical sound of some sort. My only other guesses are: something to do with my alarm installation or something to do with my grounding cables. When taking off the back seat, there are two covers. One for the fuel pump and one for what? It could be something in there too. Please help me.
I still think its the fuel pump.
Mine will whine sometimes due to voltage I think...or its temp related.
Edit: Find someone with an old 1G or 2G with a fuel pump and see if it sounds the same way. I bet it does.

Thanks Karash, I will post my results after I throw in a walbro to see if it makes a difference. My dad's 3000gt sounds very similar to mine. So you might be right, I just don't see why nobody else's car makes the same sound as mine.

UPDATE: I went ahead and installed my walbro fuel pump today, in preparation of my custom dynoflash this week. The installation was fairly simple and gave me no problems. As soon as I was ready to fire the car up, all I could think about was whether or not the high pitched sound was still going to be there. So I went and fired her up and listened. No more high pitched whine!
I drove it around for a while just to make sure the sound was gone. The sound did not return. I'm so glad I don't have to listen to that anymore. My walbro does make a small humming noise, but that is fine with me. Anything is better than that damn steam engine sound. Thanks to all you guys who suggested the problem was in the fuel pump. Now if only I can take care of those lash adjuster clicks...
