Ex. The problem with the WR is the expectations set by the 440 whp dyno sheet posted by Tim. I'm not sure the WR can meet those expectations.

What you say makes more sense... in that if more people compared trap times than holy "dyno numbers", we'd all be a lot happier. However, there are many other variables/characteristics that can't be compared just on a drag strip. If that were not the case, RRE wouldn't be cleaning house with these turbos in certain road racing events. You've heard a kudo or two from that crowd giving just "props" to the WR over stock out of respect for the manufacturer. You do not see any of them leading a march down main street touting that the WR is "the SHlT" because in racing, you don't go around handing out your advantage... think about it. You don't see them trading in, or desperately looking for a better turbo do you...

i mentioned in another thread (or maybe it was this one, who cares) that dynoing cars is an extremely unscientific process by modern application. this is a device built by engineers and physicist to create some quantifying testable repeatable data. and some people just go around using it and the data without any science whatsoever.
where are the standard deviations? where's the data about how many runs? where's the mean median and mode averages? why do people sling these numbers around like they mean ANYTHING without such supporting data? you think you can run once on a dyno and that number is it? you think you get to "pick" the highest run? that's total bull****... you do that in science and you get crucified by your peers.
the car world needs to start it somewhere... and that's a methodology which includes dynoing multiple times with the proper corrections and the proper repetition and the proper data analysis... and by analysis i don't mean my **** is bigger than your ****.
I wouldn't mind seeing some more scientific data as well. I'd gladly pay a higher price for something with a lot of good scientific data behind it, and a think a lot of other people would too.
When the factory engineers a car, there is usually a huuuuuuge amount of time and energy that goes into it. (Yes, there are still mistakes. We're only human.) I know the aftermarket doesn't usually have the resources to do this and stay competitive. But it would be nice to see them try at least a little bit harder in this particular aspect. I think it would be worth the effort.
Jeff Sponaugle, over at nabisco, is doing some great stuff to this effect. He's very very open with information and usually shows full datalogs for the comparison dyno-runs. I think it has gained him and his tuning company a lot of trust in the market, which I think is important.
But, eh, self-regulating market, anyone?
