Prototype SS55 Bolt-On Turbo Testing

Let me first say that this is not an attempt to sale a turbo. This turbo is still under development, and when/ if it becomes available to the public, it will be through an EVOm vendor.

I was asked to run a prototype turbo, the SS55 on my 03’. The turbo is based on an 05’ MR 16G and has larger compressor wheel. The two graphs below show pump gas numbers at 23 psi peak boost tapering to 21 psi at redline. The first shows just the SS55 and the second overlays the stock turbo graph. The stock turbo could not hold boost like the SS55 and tapered to about 19 psi

My car runs a Power FC, HKS Cams, Full HKS exhaust, MBC, upgraded intercooler and pipes. My car without cams put down 252 hp (pump gas) on this dyno and I was able to run a 12.51 at 110 (race gas) two weeks ago in the Texas heat. I am still on the stock clutch, new one is ordered, put will try to get some numbers this week.

This is just the start of the testing for this turbo, but I wanted to let you guys know what was going on. They will build a few more of these over the next few weeks and do some comparisons to stock 05’ turbos. I’ll post the results.

All I can say is my car pulls like mad now. A few people have driven or ridden in my car and they can chime in here to give their opinions.

If you want more technical information, I probably don’t have it or can’t give it out (more than likely don't have it). As the turbo nears production, all the information needed to make an informed buying decision will be given.

OK, the red xs don't help much.

I guess I'll have to chime in at this point...

When first notified of this turbo development, I was a bit skeptical. After all, there have been numerous threads slamming the White Rabbit. Well, I'm here to say that I have seen the WR firsthand and it is a fine product. It works and works well. My guess is they are good for about 20-25HP over a stock turbo. Guys, that's not bad for a $1500 bolt-on turbo. However, the SS55 seems to be 20 more HP over the WR. What we are talking about here was an Evo that had about 250 or so HP, added cams and this turbo and it went to 319 HP on 93 octane. This was an overall gain of about 70 HP on pump fuel. Granted, the cams were added also, but that may only account for 30HP. Therefore, I can honestly say that this is at least a 40 WHP bolt on turbo that can result in 70-80 up top. This HP may not sound like a lot, but it is just a number. My Vishnu Stage 1++ came in @ 269 on this Mustang Dyno. Again, these are just numbers...the real test will be at the track.

On the street the car runs very hard. The spool is very similar to stock and just slams when it hits. A side by side comparison of my Stage 1++ (very quick!) and the SS55 was startling. From a 30 MPH roll it walked me like I was standing still. The SS55 car and my car have identicle mods except for engine management ( I run the Xede and Robert has the Power FC) and now, of course, he has the bigger tubo.

Overall, the SS55 (codename: El Diablo) is a VERY wothwhile upgrade. In fact, I have my car modded in anticipation of a turbo upgrade. First on my list was a GT35R. I have driven an RNR GT35R equipped Evo and was quite impressed. I know the White Rabbit and have ridded in Zeus's car equipped with one. The WR is great, BUT the SS55 is better, period. My choice? The El Diablo...why? Because when you press the throttle all hell breaks loose.

Well, in a few months I'll be in the market for a turbo upgrade, I definitely want more than 25 hp from an upgrade. If I can find a nice upgrade that will put down 50-75 whp, I'd be happy

I expect that folks will be "gun shy" moving forward with these turbo upgrades... I think there is going to have to be substantial testing and validation for everyone to see in ways that we have not seen. We all want them to work as described...

I'd like to know how the turbine section has increased in diameter using the stock 05 casting.

The way this forum has jumped all over these style turbo upgrades they would have to have 5 years of BETA testing along with handing them out to all of us for free in order to keep us from complaining LOL I say just release it, those of us who really want a street car will understand what its supposed to do and gobble them up. I personally am waiting on the Dave B upgrade, only cause he has my trust not because I think the product is any better, he has just never let me down.
