OBX has a PERRIN knock off intercooler now.
well, even though the end tanks looks the same, the core is definitly different. the OBX has 15 smaller bars where as the Perrin has 14 larger bars.

here's the real PERRIN intercooler

Yeah, Someone buy that OBX one and tell us how it is. I've been biting at the bit about that one but didn't want to buy junk!

While that I think these larger ebay FMIC intercoolers are just as good as high dollar Greddy/AMS/Perrin/HKS counter-parts, so many people seem to be using them with stock turbos. I seriously doubt you will see much gains (with any kind of FMIC upgrade) while using the stock turbo. The stock Evo turbo is tiny, and the amount of air it can flow isn't really going to cause heatsoak to the stock FMIC. Maybe they provide a tiny increase in power due to the larger entanks (higher flow), but who knows. Anyone have some before and after dynographs after an FMIC install (with stock turbo)?

You can still see the fins of the XS power core. They look like it has the SAME exact fin count as the AMS core.

Regardless of the distance the photos were taken from, the fins of the XS i/c are proportionately smaller than the bars in comparison to the AMS unit.

I resized the images a bit, and brightened the XS shot...see for yourself!

The AMS core:

Then XS power core:

Looks to me that the AMS core definitely has a higher fin count.

Also keep in mind what was said above by Mitsuorder, the bar sizes are different between the two cores.

I got sucker'd in to purchasing the AMS copy EBAY FMIC about a year ago. To make a long story short. Unless you have an upgraded turbo keep the stock FMIC.

The EBAY one is very heavy and adds lag. Why add weight and lag if you don't need to?

I didnt take those pics....i found them while searching on Evom.....so the angle/distance/light quality isnt my fault

XS Power....12 fins per row
AMS.......17fins per row

So probably some better cooling going on there, flow is negotiable.

As for wether or not you need an FMIC upgrade...just like everything else on the evo, you dont need it....but if you want it, your gonna buy it.

Now the question....5-fins per row worth $500 more?

The endtanks are the same, the bar height is the same, the only difference besides weld quality (which is subjective) seems to be the fin density& spacing
