Transmission failiure
I would love to hear one of these noises live not memorex.
I have decel whine etc but I think it is normal and doesn't really bother me.
I used to work in a dealership and can tell you there are two types of technicians. Good ones and idiots and there are not a lot of good ones out there. I have a 2 year degree in automotive technology and extensive factory training for GM vehicles. I know I could track down this noise in short time. All I ever did at work was fix the **** no one else could, which didn't necessarliy pay well. Now I am thinking about opening a shop with a friend who I worked with that is a machinist and a damn good one too. If it happens it will be an import performance shop because that is where the market is hot right now.
Wish there was a meet in the South Jersey area.

Yeah, turn up the radio. Seriously though I don't think they have ever attempted to find a way to quite down the noise and they won't unless a lot more people complain about it. Since they say it is normal, and I'm starting to agree that it is, that kinda precludes the dealers from attempting anything as well.

Is there a difference with a driver alone and then with 2 or 3 passengers?
I know this is all mental, but as soon as I accepted the fact that the sound was "normal"...mine got better. The noise is still there, but I think that because I'd never heard a tranny that sounded like that before I freaked out. But it does seem to be normal. I have 3,600 miles on my car right now, and the car feels like it gets better/faster everyday!!!!! (probably due to the 100/91 mix I run now
) And, if it really is a "problem" they'll either fix it or I'll just go get the RMR clutch plate and forget about it some more. I've been through with worrying about it. Put it out of your heads and enjoy your rides guys. I love mine, grindy decel noise and all!!!

I tried to get my car to do it tonight and don't hear anything like the clearer recording in the other post. I got 1K on it now. From what I can hear on the recording though, it really does sound more clutch related and radial springs can definitely do it. I have seen them weaken and break the tabs that hold them in place. Once that happens they rattle around and can stick out and hit the flywheel bolts. Only made noise on decel and ironically the more weight in the car the worse it was, obviously more load.

Every part that is manufactured has an aceptable tolerance. It is possible that (if say the springs on the disk hub are the source of the audible decel noise) though 100% of the disks have past tolerance checks only 30% have a tolerance that results in less noise and the other 70% have a tolerance that results in more noise.
At this point, I have no evidence that the disk plays a part in the volume of the noise, other than the s2000 tsb which the regional rep did not give much credit to as it was an apples to oranges comparison. But I would like mitsubishi to consider that as a possibility and do some engineering analysis.
I've been doing some thinking about the decel noise. According to the regional guy I spoke with last monday, the noise is comming from the back faces of the gears.
Based on that, there should be a magic mixture of fluids/additives that should cut down on the amount/volume of the noise so I did some poking around looking for fluids yesterday. A couple of you have tried BG syncroshift and syncroshift II already and said that it make at least some improvement.
BG also makes an additive, LS II (limited Slip Axle additive concentrate). Here is an excerpt from the Bg page, "It is also excellent for eliminating chatter in full-time four wheel drive transfer cases". I sent an email to BG yesterday to try and find a "driveline service center" near my home or office so I could give them a listen and see if they think they have somethign that would help.
I know the dsm community is not a big fan of redline but I have had nothing but excellent results with it in the past. I came across some info on the redline shockproof line of tranny fluid: "recommended for heavily -loaded racing differentials and transmissions which see shock-loading. ShockProof contains a unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities. Available as SuperLight, LightWeight, and Heavy grades."
I came across some reviews and more detailed info on the shockproof line and it seem that the heavyweight stuff is nominally rated as 75w90 but performs up to spec with 75w250 so it should keep the gear faces very well coated. I ordered a gallon of the heavyweight and assuming it shows up this week I'm gonna give it a try this weekend and see how it goes.

What about the occasional clank when shifting in first and second?

I'm glad I found this post because I was just about to start a new thread on my concerns about this sound. I'm actually very worried about this sound my car has been making when shifting into first then sencond and on accasion third. Can some experts please shead some light on the clanking noise made when shifting into these gears? I'm going to bring this problem to the attention of the dealership when I go to bring my car in for an oil change.

Mad_VIII....I've got over 4k on my EVO so far. I still hear the noise...but it hasn't worsened in anyway. Glad to hear you were able to put your mind at rest and can now FULLY start enjoying the driving pleasure of the EVO.
so far so good with my EVO. No problems whatsoever. My old eclipse spyder gst was already in for about its 6th visit at this mileage when I bought that car.
I'm actually impressed with the build quality...considering its a mitsubishi. They have really constructed some POS cars in the past. But the EVO just feels rock solid all around.
I do hear clunks when pulling out of driveways sometimes in the rear and even in front. I assuming its the springs. No big deal to me. I also have a few light vibrations in the dash sometimes...but they dont bother me. It seems like the interior is put together so tight....vibrations are bound to happen. I can feel what seems like the syncros grabbing the gears when shifting slowly from 1st to 2nd...and especially into 3rd! Its not a grind...but its not smooth either. And I can still SWEAR my car pulls to the left too much! Especially on the freeway in the left lane.
Is it just me? I'm somewhat tempted to take it in and complain. Maybe get a free alignment check out of it. I had it checked the first time I visited and they measured the alignment with a tape measure I think? But...it wasn't on the actual machine.. They said it was fine.
I'm just a handling freak thats all!
Other than that....I feel the structural integrity is on par with a late model 3-series a buddy of mine drives at work.
I now have almost no doubts this car wont feel like it will cowl shake to death and rattle to pieces like eclipse's of old when they started approaching the 60k mile mark. Nevermind 100k!
