Flash memory only has so many writes before it no longer works. Good for things like ECU program upgrades. Bad for stuff that has to be written every time you drive the car.

I'd be really surprised if the ECU were that sophisticated, though. How would the ECU know what constitues "abuse?"
Some M3 owners went through this.... the ecu in the m was recording rev limiter kickins if the dealer reads the ecu and it was showing like more than three times hitting the rev limiter when a car came in they would refuse to do any warranty work die to "abuse" So there is no magic counter just the way they interpret the stored data, they could have a peek hold function and use that to determine what the max revs you hit along with max speed etc.... So if you have not been following your breaking ... reset the ecu before you take it into the dealer jsut to be safe.

My breakin -

Drove very easy for first 600 miles. Varied speed every chance i got! Did decels from 4000rpm down in every gear. - Changed oil.

After 600 miles I did some Full Throttle runs and decels only from 5500 down in every gear.

After 900 miles now, ive been pegging it every chance I get, bringing it all the way up to 6900rpm baby!@ Im going to change the oil again this weekend at 1000 miles.

Also, those two lower stress bars up front could possibly be rubbing against the downpipe.

Just don't automatically jump to the conclusion that it is the transmission.
Josh,

Feel free anytime to take a spin in mine to help diagnose the problem, if there actually is one.

Update

Hey all,
Just wanted to post an update on my car ... i have around 2600 miles on it now, and the noise it was making has quieted down significantly. Its still there, just not near as loud as it was .. when people ride in my car now, i try to point it out, but they cant even hear it This leads me to believe that it was probably the clutch, and now that its broke in, its much quieter, but then again, what do i know .. im not a techie guy, hehe

Also, the rattling noise i thought was from my dash on the passenger side turned out to be the seat-belt adjuster on that side. We played with it a little bit and gave it a good wack, and imagine this, no more noise

Anyways, im loving my car now, though, I got stomped today by a CL32 AMG mercedes (the new one with 350hp, that weighs LESS than our car). I smoked him on the launch but then proceded to grind 2nd gear, lol .. so he shot past me

I suck!
Enjoy your Evos!

Bill,
feel free to show up at any of the Fort Devens autocrosses - I'll gladly umm *cough* err, test your noises for you. You can even ride with me (or vice versa) if you want...Or sign up for any of the upcoming schools, I can help with unwanted noises there too (at least, drowning them out...)

Only too happy to help }-]

Hehe...I'm currently at 1700 miles and also feel the decel noise hasn't gotten any worse. I started noticing it at 300 miles. Its almost at the point now where I pretty much dont even notice it anymore. Whether it has quieted down or I just learned to live with it....who nows

But...on my way back from mtn biking yesterday, with my bike on top of the car....I completely smoked a fox body mustang gt in every gear a couple of times. He had a few mods too I could tell.
But my stock EVO just pulled away from him in every gear, especially 1st through 3rd.

I was a bit leary about the performance of my EVO, but after yesterday...NOT ANYMORE!

I'm the same way with the noise; I've complete grown accustomed to it (though I don't think it's quite as loud as some other members are experiencing) and don't really notice it anymore. Though if it is proven to be some sort of serious defect I will definitely want it corrected, though to be honest, for most of the cases I don't really think it's going to be much more than a slight irritation.

Update (1200miles):

My noise actually seems a little quiter in all gears except 4th. 3rd is now pretty quite, but 4th still seems a little grindy. I want to change out the tranny fluid and transfer case fluid, but I don't know what weight of oil to use, and the dealer doesnt know jack either. I posted a new topic on this board, but havent got any answers back from anyone.

Perhaps someone on this forum knows what and how much type of gear oil to put in the tranny and transfer case? I know the trans case has an oil cooling additive in it, so that may be difficult to get a hold of, the OEM version anyway....

I feel the same way. My car seems to be very strong now at 1200 miles. The engine, turbo, everything are working very well now. It pulls hard to redline begging for more in every gear. I can really tell the engine has broken in well. The transmission is also shifting very well, my only problem with the box itself is getting into second gear, i can feel the synchro spinning most of the time on my throw into second. I have to wait on it....sux

yup...had the 35lb beast standing on the roof while I spanked this stang all the way up to 120mph, twice..

When I came home though...I did notice the bike rack was shifted about an inch backwards though

I wish I could of caught the look on the mustang drivers face afterwards. Yes buddy....you just got smoked by a stock 4 banger!

Have you considered taking your car in? Ask them to check your clutch adjustment. My clutch must be depressed to the floor to shift and doesn't fully release until the very top. A small adjustment might help?
