A friend who rode in my car yesterday who owns an 02 WRX said it sounds nearly identical to what his Suby did until they offered a warrantly replacement on the clutch-pressure plate. Apparently, it made this aweful grinding-rattling noise that was so annoying that subaru just warranty replaced anyone who wanted a new one, even though there was no harmful effects.
Im hoping maybe its something so simple as this on our cars, so im keeping my fingers crossed
Though,
HAS had a history of tranny problems. My VR4 got a recall on the transfer case ... that fortunately was not leaking. I know a lot of people who have had to get new tranny's in stealths and VR4s around 80-100k miles.

How many miles have you put on the new tranny?
Im wondering if anyone who has gotten a new tranny has passed the 600-700 mile mark on it ...
Just like the law "If they don't catch ya, you aren't guilty"..... Mod the crap out of the car. Who cares, have fun.
If you do good work and something breaks, like the tranny in this case that is clearly not a "one off" situation, Mitsu fixes it. If something breaks because you were stupid, like boosting to 30lbs, then you answered your own question.

Update
Update:
I stopped by the dealer (Tuttle Click in Irvine, CA) to have my transmission decel noise and dash rattle checked. The service manager there told me that
is aware of and working on the decel noise and dash rattle problems that many owners (many more than visit this board) are reporting. Many of the Evos they have sold there have 1 or both of these problems. In fact, they have an Evo thats been sitting in the shop with a bad tranny for 3 weeks now waiting on word from
on what to do. He told me he would contact me as soon as he heard anything, or a TSB was issued, or what not. Lets all hope it doesnt take too long

DAMN IT,
I was hoping the noise I keep hearing on throttle off slowdown (till around 3000 rpm) was just a loose heat shield..... Now I'm worried as hell. I'm calling the dealer today to make an appointment.

Yeah, I took mine into the dealer...The shop forman is the only guy who knows anything about the EVO, i.e. the service advisor doesn't know a damn thing (the rat bastard). They said they took the car out, heard a "noise", but then they took their "testdrive" EVO out and it made the same "noise" so he figured that it was just normal drivetrain noise. These guys have their heads up their *****!!!! The car is at AEM right now, they're using it for R&D for the intake that the'll produce for it, and as soon as it gets out it'll go straight back to the dealer, and it WILL be opened up. No more "my shop forman took it for a test drive" crap.
Well,
I called peachtree
yesterday and made an appointment to drop the car off, they had not heard of the issue or so they say. I called
America yesterday as well and spoke to someone about the issue and just told her that I was obviously concerned with the car having less than 500 miles and all and that the dealer had not heard of the issue. I also stressed that I hoped it was just a loose heat sheild or something simple, but that I had seen numerous folks on the forum who were not so lucky with the same symptoms I had. She contacted the service manager and informed him of the symptoms I was having and I guess asked him to take care of me when I showed up today. He came out and greated me personally when I showed up. I took the evo tech for a short drive and made sure that he heard what I was talking about. He seemed unsure where to start but did agree that the noise was not normal. I mentioned that checking the tranny fluid for metal would be a good place to start and that the engineers at the tech line should be aware of some of the other folks that have had the same symptoms. Anyway... we will see how this all turns out, I hope that they can either fix the noise or determine that the car needs to be down for R&R by the end of day today so I can get a loaner out of them.

Well,
I just talked to the service manager, who said that they called the tech line and were told that this is "an inherant noise in the transmission" he also said they drove one of the other evo's they have there and it did the same thing so they don't think anything is wrong with the car. I asked him if they had checked the fluid for metal shavings and he said not yet.
sounds kinda like one of the other evo owners experiences to the T. "we drove one of the others and it does the same thing so this must be normal"
We shall see. I'm gonna check the fluid myself this weekend and see if there looks like a problem. I guess time will tell for sure........
