Ask them to check for anything that is loose, today I can hear it rattle when I warm up the car this morning. Also ask them to check the clutch if you can. I don't think it is the tranny.

The new STi will have a completely redesigned tranny which should address many of the issues the current crop of WRXes suffer from - which is that its the same basic tranny that started life as a four speed with only about 90 ft/lbs of torque being fed through it. I imagine Mitsu will be following along with a new tranny shortly if for no other reason then to have a six speed also.

The Evo is a good car with a good warranty. Drive 'em, enjoy them, and don't worry so damned much. If the tranny breaks, will fix it... providing you aren't abusing the car. Remember, it was never meant to be a drag car.

The Evo transmission has limited lateral space in the case for gears. If they add a 6th gear to the transmission, I doubt the case will get any larger, since it would intrude on the wheel-well.

So how do they fit a 6th gear in there? They make the other gears in the transmission thinner and weaker.

Stick with the 5 speed. The US is probably LUCKY that they got the 5 speed rather than the 6!

They do offer both 5 and 6 speed EVO 8 RS in Japan.

Im honestly starting to agree with this. I also think its the clutch, specifically it might be the throw-out bearing in the clutch assembly. Nowdays, my car doesnt seem to make the noise all the time anymore, and i really think its quieter. Its always been after the car warmed up and i made a few hard runs in 3rd and 4th gear.

I was thinking, have i ever heard a car before make this kind of sound? Then i remember'd, my father's 1988 944 Turbo used to make a very similar sound to my Evo ... he sold it with 100k miles on it, with the original clutch and tranny in the car, so im not so worried.

I really love driving my Evo, and im going to drive it to its fullest. I dont abuse it, never launch hard and always shift easy. Because of this, i have no worries that wont replace my tranny or diff if it goes bad

The past few days i had been trying to show the noise to some of my friends, but usually they just say "What noise? I dont hear anything."

Well, It sure is starting to sound like there are only one or two of us (me and boostedwrx) that have serious noise problems. Not to try and downplay others issues.

Mine does it all the time hot or cold in every gear. It can be heard above the radio and road noise with windows up or down. There are times It is not as bad but I cannot point to any specific set of circumstances and say it's not as bad when x happens or I do y ....

I have tried over and over to ignore it and I simply cannot for more than a few minutes at a time.

Now if the regional manager will ever call me back, I might be able to get this worked out.

mine has been to the dealer twice caused i couldn't shift into gears, this tranny sucks the big one they should of left the original one in like the one on the evo vii. i am checking the lemon laws right now about the tranny. don't let your car reach 12k miles otherwise the warranty on the clutch is void

Uh ok...first of all this tranny does NOT suck. Our problems are NOT in the tranny. They are most likely clutch problems if they are "problems" at all. I had my appointment today with the reegional service rep. He brought along two guys who seemed to be engineers from of japan!! The two guys didn't say a word in english the whole time. They came along for the test ride with me and the REP, taking notes. It was rather eerie actually I was actually kind of nervous that I was gonna miss a shift or grind a gear for some odd reason. Anyway the rep told me that my noise was "normal" for the evos. He didn't sweep it under the rug however. Right now they are investigating things to see if there is a problem with the clutches, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the tranny's they have replaced across the country so far. (except for maybe limy's old one he he) He said that the reason they have been pulling tranny's so fast on the other cars was so that they could take a look at them because they are VERY concerned with the performance and reputation of this car. as he put it "we have a lot riding on the evo". But this has all been posted before. So to conclude, he told me to not to worry about it, drive it however I want to, go to track days autocrosses, whatever (obviously excluding the non-abusive stuff like 5k launching at every stop light, as some of these lamers have been doing). He said to drive it hard and fast if I wanted to, and that I had 36,000 to play with!!! He assured me that hard non-abusive driving would'nt void the warranty. is very concerned with the satisfaction of the evo owners, especially the first production run, and they wouldn't screw people out of warranty work and blame everything on abuse, so he said. I dunno. I feel a little better, although I wish that noise wasn't there, but I guess I'll stop whinning about it and we'll see if it breaks or actually finds a prob and fixes it. Till then I'm going to stop worrying and get on with enjoying my car!!! Good luck

i say just drive the hell out of the car(minus drag style 5-6K launches) and if it breaks thats what the warranty is for

Wow ricardon! That's absolutely awesome how they handled it. That's pretty cool that they sent 2 engineers from Japan ... best service I've seen.

A similar thing happened with the Outlander when there were a few cases of a stuck throttle during really cold weather here in Minnesota. They sent some engineers directly to the dealership.

Yeah, I feel a lot more secure about the deal now. Another thing that I thought was VERY VERY cool about this guy was the way he seemed to go out of his way to make sure I felt that he/ ad my back, so to speak. My plastic rivets that hold the air duct in place had fallen off for some weird reason, and I had secured it with two zip ties for a temporary fix (you can see it in the pic of my engine bay on my vehicle page). I popped the hood and showed him, and the engineers came over and farted around with it and took picture and notes, it was actually pretty funny. So, he opens the hood to the factory evo he had (it has the upgraded front strut tower brace installed!) and pops the rivets out of it and gives them to me!! I thought that was an awesome gesture, even though they probably had those in the dealer, the fact that he took them off his car and said "I'll get some put on hen I go back to the office" was cool!

I spoke to my rep yesterday as well. He said the reason they replaced so many trannies (mine included) is that they had a production issue where metal shavings from the machining process were not getting flushed out of the casings before assembly. This is not so of all the cars but they did have a few and all dealers have been instructed to check the tranny fluid when the vehicles come in for service.

I still cannot accept that every evo sounds like mine does, especially after reading the other thread were som many people claim not to hear anything out of the norm with their cars...

Time will tell, the rep is comming back up first week of june to meet me at my dealer and ride with me. He did sound very concerned with my satisfaction and is an automotive engineer (I'm a mechanical) that had some good ideas about where the nosie may be eminating from though the clutch was not one of them....

Hey guys...

I'm taking my car in today to have the decel noise looked at.

Would any of you which have already had the issue looked at, be able to pass along a Dealer contact name and phone number so I can pass it along to my local dealer?

This way they would be able to get a head start on the problem. (if there really is one)

Thanks!

The dealer needs to call techline, if they don't know what that is then run away very quickly.

Problems is they are just going to tell you that the "noise you are hearing is 100% normal and is enherant to all evo's"

I hope this is not the case, but I would warn the dealer when you drop of the car that techline will probably dismiss the noise, and ask them check the car over and see if they have any ideas about where the noise is comming from before they call techline. Also, If they want to drive another evo to "compare" the noise ask that they wait till you are present so you can ride with them and verify the results of the comparison.
