My new evo sounds like that. It doesnt sound abnormal to me. I've had an eclipse and it sounded amost the same when I removed a panel in the firewall to run some wires. I think it's because we may have a thinner firewall causing us to hear everything. I rode in friends GSX the other day and I noticed it sounded a lot like this too but not as loud. Sounds like a rough vibration when you let go of the gas especially in 2nd and 3rd gears. I'm not going to worry about it. If my tranny falls out one day then i'll start worrying.

I can hear this noise, too. But it is definitely coming from the back. I suspect that it's the rear lsd making the noise. Our lsd is a clutch pack-style, which would definitely explain the 'grinding'-type noise.

hmmm my sound (and I believe most others) is coming from the front, you may have a different prob MHGSX......

I know even if more dampening material was added, the "Bucket of Bolts" sound I get will still be audible. I get another sound though that accompanies the Bucket of Bolts sound, that resenbles kind of like a Shimmy or a Vibration... kind of hard to explain ya know?

my noise sounds like it's coming from the front for sure. If ANYONE is able to get anything replaced besides the tranny make sure you post it because I want to make sure that they don't try to do it on a case by case basis. It always happens that way, like MAD VIII may be more convincing because he's an engineer so he might get his ****e replaced, and me being a dumbass (i.e. not an engineer ) may get the runaround because I don't have the capacity to argue with them.

Dude, your killing me! I have a degree but I work in the computer field..... but maybee your right about it giving a little leverage....

I'm in a holding pattern at the moment waiting for the rep to come back to atl.... We need to all try and get sound clips. I'm thinking about going to buy a radio shack mic to ziptie under the hood to try and get a good quality recording.

I can mainly hear it out of my left ear, and can deffinetly hear it from outside the car as well.. It might be rather convencing to show someone an mpeg clip of a shinny new Evo rolling past a riced out junker with the evo sounding like the tranny is shot......

Has anyone gotten a good look at the wastegate actuator assembly??? The rep and I were talking about that as a possibility cause it sure sounds like metal on metal vibration.. though there is also some metal grinding noise as well.

I think the two key thing here are not to get lulled into accepting an invalid or silly answer. These types of problems are very hard to relay to someone in writting or via the phone, (though I bet If I called my rep from my cell phone in the car he could here the noise). So it makes it tough when a dealer calls techline and has to explian the noise or how loud it is or how it compairs to other evos. And for us to keep each other informed of any progress or lack there of.

Personally, if they are going to tell me that every evo sounds like mine they are going to have to prove it to me, or they will get the car back under the lemmon law and be out 25 grand or so (since it can't be resold without disclosure). I've already spoken with a lemon law attorney and am prepaired to pursue that if they cannot fix the vehicle to my satisfaction.

Guys you are killing me here!

Reading this thread is like an emotional rollercoaster...very glad to hear that some japanese engineers went along for that ride however. So what now guys? I havent gotten to 600 miles yet...still babyin the crap out of my Evo (IT IS SO HARD NOT TO RACE THOSE STANGS THAT KEEP TAUNTING ME) ...anyway.

Seriously...I have never owned a car with turbo...much less a car that has so much pickup as this car. Tomorrow I am stopping by the dealer to have him adjust the left headlight (those HIDs you can really see what level they are at)...I might have him check over the drivetrain a bit just to be sure.

At 600 or 1000 miles I think im going to have the entire car flushed with new oil and fluids. Good thread...but kind of a wild ride for a brand new Evo Owner

The noise I hear is definitely located at the rear. I really don't think that it is a problem, though.

I now have 2 theories as to the cause of my decel noise. The first is the LSD. As I stated before, clutch-pack style= noise.

The second is the muffler. Our muffler has some type of flapper design and I think the fact that the decel noise everyone mentions only happens at certain rpms might be a resonance in the exhaust. From owning a GSX w/3" exhaust, I remember that there was a decel resonance noise only at certain rpms. Maybe something is loose inside the muffler causing it to vibrate?

My question to all those who have this tranny noise:

Are you running the stock exhaust system???

Well...I payed a visit to the dealer yesterday. I explained the decel noise and went for a test drive with the tech. He definitely noticed it after a while, although is was a bit tough to pick up in the passenger seat for me. But after a smooth paved road came up, I was able to finally point it out to him clearly. He didn't seem too concernced, but did say he would look into the problem. I mentioned everyone here who was also experienced similar issues.

They made a few checks and call's, I think to other dealers and techline probably. They pretty much told me that drivetrain noise's are to be expected in a car bulit like this.

I really didn't want to push the issue and didn't want to have them start tearing down the tranny looking for answers. However...I did get it put on paper that the noises are normal. I've also got my VIN logged for the problem at the mitsu customer service number.

Since I drive alot of miles, I've already got over 1400 in 10 days, I'm glad I at least have it on record.

The noise is annoying dont get me wrong, but having the peace of mind knowing that the dealer says its normal, has made me feel better about it. I can definitely enjoy driving my EVO much more now then before.

My love for this car wont be affected by this noise. I've been an Evolution follower for years and to finally have the opportunity to own one.....is just plain AWESOME!

However...if the noise does start to get louder or any other symptoms start happening, I'll start getting worried again. But for now....I'll learn to live with it.

I however do want to thank the guys out there who are pushing the envelope. I can definitely understand your point of view on the noise. Your ultimately the dudes that help force TSB's to get released. Hopefully one gets issued soon explaining exactly what the hek this noise is coming from...and if it is indeed normal, or if work actually is required.

I haven't heard the noise in person. However, a free-flowing exhaust will be very loud on deceleration. And that flapper valve might make some odd noises.

Also, those two lower stress bars up front could possibly be rubbing against the downpipe.

Just don't automatically jump to the conclusion that it is the transmission.

BE WARNED!!!!! Mits dealers have be told to hook them up to a scaner,They can tell if there is abuse by the record. We got one with 5th gear goon but it is an easy fix and waranty but not every dealer will honor that.

If you are really worried about this, just yank the fuse that powers the ECU for a little while. It should kill any memory that the ECU has. I doubt they use flash memory to store data like this. Flash memory only has so many writes before it no longer works. Good for things like ECU program upgrades. Bad for stuff that has to be written every time you drive the car.

I'd be really surprised if the ECU were that sophisticated, though. How would the ECU know what constitues "abuse?"
