Been checking on tranny problems and it seems that the VIII has lots of failures. Have not seen any on the IX yet other than TC. But, of course, maybe there isn't any IX with high mileage yet (or high enough to have failures). I would love to get the MR, but I don't think I can afford one. Anyone heard of any IX with tranny failures yet?

Your question is very vague. The first Evo 8 were having a lot of TC problems. On the Evo 9 not only is too soon to determine that the TC can fail but also too soon to determine if the tranny is bad.

As far is the failure on the Evo 8 trannys I haven't heard much to be honest, probably about 10 times more durable than the WRX

It's just I'm not sure if it is worth the extra "insurance" to pay for the MR. If the 5 speeds are still problematic, then I may opt to get the MR for the 6 speed. The extra $$ is a lot for the 6 speed...

 

The 6spd isn't the only thing you get with the MR, and the 6spd is not stronger than the 5spd. You're confusing the IX vs VIII 5spd and the MR 6spd. These are completely different subjects.

There is no "insurance" when buying an MR. I'm not sure what you were referring to when you said that...
