Good turbo w/o sacrificing spool

I would like to hear some opinions form different members as to spool characteristics with upgraded turbos. Even just upgrading the stock turbo with different exhaust housings, ect. Would be nice to almost see a database for this. I did a search already so please don't tell me to do that, if theres one out there I didn't find it. I liked the thread in the sticky that told all the differences in Evo 1 thru MR turbos, good technical stuff. It would be nice though to get a real world guide though, as the turbo steps up in size where is full boost achieved in a particular gear, like 3rd since its kind of a tweener gear. Any info. is appreciated.

So far I think the best option is a TME with alchy.

Very quick spool and capable of high WHP numbers.

If they made an EVO9 TME (JSPEC RS TURBO) available at a resonable price I would buy it in a second. After that you might as well just go BIG or go home.

A ball bearing 50trim always sound appealing to me but most people still lose a bunch of low-end response so you might as well just go with a bigger newer-technology turbo.

I must be getting fickle in my old age...whereas yesterday I lusted after a TME-9, today a different girl...a WR-9 has caught my fancy. She would possess the IX's more efficient compressor housing wrapped around a 5-bladed FP compressor wheel, spooled up by a Ti turbine wheel housed in a ported 10.5 housing. And eventhough I am opposed to drugs, I could imagine her as being fully prompted by a meth kit.

Edit: Duh, I guess this would be the same item that already goes by the name of the BR 20G-9-5....why am I so totally dumb?

Keep them coming. If you guys have stock spool numbers such as rpm at full boost psi and the same for aftermarket turbos, post them. Thanks.

20g-9-5 with alky. 354 awhp / 357 tq on pump (27 psi) and 366 (30psi) awhp on 110 on Buschur's MD.

Full spool by 3400- 3500 rpm.

I'm happy.

20g-9-6 Cheaper than the 209-5 from br, and some pull better numbers, just dont expect it to last a crazy long time boosting at 29 Psi all the time.

I recently posted some data from my setup that you may find useful. I went from a GT3076 setup to the IX turbo (for various reasons including the thought of trading in the car).

Why the IX turbo? Well, I had a long conversation with Robert from Forced Performance (designer of the 5 blade 20G) who suggested that I stick with the stock IX turbo unless I was planning to run race gas. The gains from the 20G wheel are only realized at very high boost levels -- unattainable by pump fuel. My next idea was to incorporate the TME internals inside the stock IX housing. Robert said that his extensive dyno testing only showed only a 200rpm spool advantage of the TME IX over the stock IX, and that's not worth $400 more to me.

While I was swapping the turbo, I went ahead and installed the WORKS O2 housing as well with their 3" downpipe. Remembering what the stock VIII turbo with stock DP felt like (and viewing data logs from both setups), there's a noticable improvement in performance.

Good luck with your upgrade.

Full spool by about 3600 or so? Maybe even quicker on the street unless thats a load bearing dyno?

The boost data came directly from my MAP sensor...which is sampling from the manifold. This was a 3rd gear pull on the road, not on a dyno. My UR cam gears are set to -2/-2, which takes a little from the midrange in exchange for more top end power.

What you're starting with and what your target is would be helpful. Will you run racegas? Do you have a preferred cam setup? Do you want stock or better spoolup? How much boost? etc., etc., etc. ...

Good luck!

BTW, I'll have performance numbers on the FP WR in an '03 w/10.5, O2, 3"TBE, 268/272s, BR Deluxe FMIC and piping after this weekend if the weather doesn't crap out. I can run 25psi on 93 octane and she's flashed.

I know she's not the popular turbo anymore but I sure embarrass the crap out of alot of other vehicles including beginning-built Evos ...
