I have the same sound too. it started the second I put a lightend crank pully on at about 9k. took it off a week later and it went away. now about 6 months later its back. and I've had the stock pully on all this time too. don't know what it is. I will say I had a well known garage in my area look at it. they checked everything. they even listened to the engine with a steth-a-scope and ruled out the bareings. but they still dont have a clue what it was. drives me crazy!!

You know the IX is supossed to have a stronger more improved belt
over the VIII. Maybe the IX belts have something to do with it.

the dealership told me its normal. My car is currently getting the 5th gear syncro replaced, and they say the the noise is from the reverse gear spinning on its own when the car is on iddle? i dunno.

all I know is i am driving a Kia and I miss my Evo

If you listen to mine again, it's that squeaking noise every 1/2 sec... like someone is sawing off
a piece of metal going back and forth....

My IX was making the same noise. It all started at about 17-20,000 miles. When the noise started I took my car to the auto hobby shop on base an put her up on the lift. it seemed that the noise was more prevelent from underneath the car. I was convinced that the noise was comming from the timing belt/accessory belt area somewhere forward of the water pump pulley. For almost 7 months I lived with that noise untill just recently when I pulled my head off to install a set of ARP studs along with BC springs/retainers and Cosworth cams. Anyway, when I pulled the accessory belt and took off the tensioner and idler pulley - I found where that noise was comming from. The noise was comming from the accessory belt idler pulley. After I removed the pulley, I gave it a few spins and it did'nt feel very smooth so I sprayed the back of the pulley with wd40 and it felt alot better when I spun it. The pulley has to come off in order to spray the bearing. After I put my car back together - the noise was totally gone. This pulley bolts to the block and is pretty much forward of the water pump pulley and down a little. After removing the accessory belt, you can't miss it. I suggest removing the accessory belt and giving that idler pulley a spin. If the pulley feels rough when you spin it, take it off and soak the rear where the bearing is with wd40 or something. I can't say for sure that the idler pulley is the culprit, but I'm about 75% sure it was. I also replaced my timing belt/balance shaft belt with the Greddy belts but I don't think the factory belts were making that noise. Everything else in the accessory/timing belt areas looked normal. The idler pulley was the only thing I found that needed attention.

If the stealer said "it's normal"... ask the service manager to log it on your
car as detail as possible.

As far as wd40... dealer did that for my timing belt too, I believe..
They open up my enigne..spray a little on the belt.. noise went away.
But they still replaced my belt..:-D

Im at 11k and the noise just started for me. Seems like 11-12k it begins for most of the crowd here. I wont worry about it, until it actually affects perfomance or my idle.
