Quote: my noise does not increase with revs, it only happens at idle.

i was told by some friends its the idler bearing. so i will swap this weekend and let you know!
Are you saying the noise goes away above idle or the noise just doesn't get louder above idle? My doesn't get louder above idle it just follows the same speed as the engine speed.

Does anyone know if your suppose to replace the timing belt (b) at the same time as timing belt (a)? My manual is in the car at the dealer... What's the (b) belt anyway? For the balance shaft?

Yerp, no volume change, only the frequency of the noise changes with engine speed.

I would think that everything on the left side of the engine (timing) should be directly related to the speed of the engine.

Taking to Mitsu in the morning. A little nervous about someone else working on my baby.

it does not get louder above idle. the frequency does not change either when the revs increase as i drive ( u cannot even hear it over the damn engine). hence y i believe its the idler bearing (external) and has nothing to do with the timing belt.

if ur noise incresed with revs or gets louder u should stop driving the car immediately, a timing belt going off would damage ur engine badly.

k_fabec keep us posted i will be swapping idler bearings this weekend to see if i can cure the noise!

Thanks in advance.

Another bump for this thread. I have the same noise and it hurts to hear. REALLY don't want to do to the dealer especially with the beef I have with MMNA right now...

hey mitchubishi,

i have this same issue. it seems to be an on going thing with the IX's. i set up an appointment for my car i'm taking it to the dealership saturday so hopefully it's still under warranty.

from what i hear it is the timing belt pulley tensioner. i had bought the timing belt and balance belt and hydraulic tensioner thinking maybe that might be it but from researching it seems to be unanimous that the pulley tensioner is the issue.

i'll update you guys and the thread i had started with the new info from the dealer.

It is the belt that is making the noise,i have witnessed two evo 9`s with the same problem, checked everything, replaced all pullies and tensioners and the noise eventually comes back. There is a slight drag on the belt which from time to time starts to make the noise.

well during the troubleshooting i had sprayed a bit of belt conditioner on the timing belt and the noise went away but it came back the very next day. i tried spraying again and it didnt make a difference.

Maybe it wasn't this thread, but I thought it was concluded that it was the belt contacting the crank sensor blade. This makes sense as I checked mine out and I did have some light wear around the passengers side of the timing belt. I think it was the way the tensioner was designed that caused this problem, and I remember someone saying that there is a newer style tensioner that fixes this problem?

That's what it was on mine. Had it fixed 12,000 miles ago and the noise hasn't come back since. I don't believe there is a new type of tensioner, just positioning...
