IX Engine idle noise (belt?) (video)
Well here is my dealership experience.....
So listen to this!!! I took it to the dealership and he said that my idle pully was on BACKWARDS!!!! He said since it wasn't on properly that is was causing the timing belt to rub against the sensor blade which was making that same noise as everyone else is having. So apparently my issue was a bit different, but same parts.... same noise... Therefore if anyone is having this noise issue... Tell your local dealership that they should be aware of the issue. If not, call the Glendale Mitsubishi in California because he said that there is a bulitin about this exact noise and that he fixed this on many Evo IX's before. I think ths should have been a recall due to the amount of people with this problem. So make sure when you go to the dealership you don't waste your time and write down all the parts listed in this forum as potential problems so they can check every part for the noise. If they at all tell you that it is "Normal" tell them to go f**k themselves!! and you want to talk to their supervisor! I had the noise at 11K and now it is fixed at 15K!!! only have gone like 100 miles so far but no more noise!!!! Good luck all!
Forgot to mention
It was on backwards from the factory!!! It was never removed since I owned the car!!! So maybe yours isn't on properly either.... Long shot because I think my issue was a fluke, but also he said he reset the timing belt which was the only other thing he did besides turn the pulley to the correct position.
i dunno about u but my issue only happens at initial startup (engine cold) and then when it warms up the sound disappears.... so how would a backwards belt or rubbing issue relate to that? wouldnt that be a more consistent thing?
I just saw this thread and I had a similar problem to the OP video starting around 19k miles. I took it to the dealership and they said it was the timing belt rubbing on the cam gear covers. So they replaced my timing belt and idle pulley, all under warranty, and said it should be fixed. The noise was gone for maybe 500 miles then it came back. So I was just dealing with it for a while until I installed my new cams. When putting my car back together after the install, I started the car with the cam gear cover off, no noise. Put the cover on, noise came back immediately. What I noticed was the cover was getting hit in a small area by the timing belt. So I shaved some material off of the cam gear cover where it was hitting. 10k miles later no noise. Hope this helps

Sorry to hear that. I might have just gotten lucky that it was only my cam gear cover. But the sound is so annoying. I am really interested in finding out what else causes it. Have you heard anything more from your dealership?
well apparently they havent been able to hear it. all they hear is the power steering pump charging upon start up. i cant believe they dont hear it. the only thing i can imagine is that the 3hr drive cause it to go away but it wasnt a constant noise. i'm going there saturday to pick it up.
That is how it is for me as well, however, even when warm it seems to come back around idle. perhaps there is more tightness of the belt at higher rpms that keeps it from sliding. I have no clue. But, there is no doubt, that mitsubishi should have a recall for this item regardless of how many mods you got. I can also see the slight belt wear on the one side where it is rubbing. Definitely a manufacturing flaw.
ok so i fixed my problem!
what happened in my case is that water had gotten onto one of the timing belt tensioners causing an annoying tap at idle and above (cannot really hear it due to exhaust).
i did a full timing kit change and replaced OEM belts with Greddy belts to. problem fixed no weird noises.
question: when i removed my balance shaft belt i saw that the inside of the belt was partly damaged is this the same thing you guys are seeing? it seems to JUST be rubbing on the crank sensor blade?!?
Question: can a high pitch sound from the serpentine belt be from tightening it too much?
Thanks

Took it to another dealership, they opened the time belt cover and sprayed WD40 inside and "poof" the noise went away. They put in a request to have it fixed and now the dealership stated that the rep said that they are not going to repair it until they find out that there is a problem. I called Mitsubishi Motors and told them what my concern was and they gave me a case number. I encourgae anyone with problems to do the same. Call 1-866-MITSU2009. It took 5 minutes to get a case started.
OMFG!!!! I started up my car this morning and it has this F**KING SOUND TOOOOOO!!! and it only has 19.8k on it... WTF
The noise goes away w/the AC on due to the fact that the RPMs ride slightly higher than idle. And my AC unit doesn't even work since I bought it (yes I did take it to the dealer a while ago and had it stay at the dealership for about 2 days and still no resolutions for it... dang dang dang)

My car is at the dealer as I type. I brought it in for the 30k service and told them about the "noise". The said its a common with 06's and the current fix is changing the timing belt, which they're doing under warranty. They also said that the noise sometimes comes back and Mitsubishi hasn't come up with permanent fix yet. Ill have it in a few hours hopefully.
*Update*
Engine sounds good. Now I can hear my injectors ticking again but....the dealership overfilled my engine by a quart, got coolant everywhere , fingerprints and oil drips everywhere, and to top it off my timing belt cover is chipped. That's the last time I take it in for routine service there.

Mitsubishi called me after I opened my case and now the area DM wants to test drive my car. Problem is you can't hear it while driving. You can only hear it at idle. Sounds like Mitsu is just trying to look for a way out of this one.
