Car update

So my car is still not making any noise and it has been 2K miles since they replaced the parts I listed in my last post. Junior, You have a great case for a lemon!!! Get yourself a lawyer. I am in a case myself right now. As long as you have all the paperwork from each visit, and they have replaced things and nothing was fixed at least 3 times, you have a great case. Call your local Lemon Law Lawyer. They work on consignment which means that they get paid by the Manufacture (Mitsubishi) and it costs nothing to you. All you have to do is call and if they accept your case then you have a great chance of getting mitsubishi to settle and buy your car back, or settle and give you money for the hassle of having a car with so many issues. Either way it is a win win. Hope that helps!

Just as an update my noise came back after about 6k-7k miles. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow for them to "look at it."

Good luck! Mine started making this noise at just under 20k miles, and after two days of the dealership "looking at it", they want to charge me $130 after spraying brake cleaner on the belts. They seem to think that the belts were overdressed, and that's why it's making this grinding sound at idle, and only idle. WTF?!?!?! A fudging monkey could figure out that the problem is not the accessory belts. So....I've instructed them to call Glendale Mitsubishi and/or the Mitsu tech line before settling on that diagnosis, since I will be demanding a full refund of my $130 if I have to bring it in next week for the same issue.

When I went to have my t-belt changed (hair over 60k), all four crank-pulley bolts were backed out. I had no noise but I wish it had made some since that is no laughing matter if it had come off sometime earlier. At high rpm who knows what kind of damage it could have done.

Wondered if they were never torque correctly - no work ever done in that area until the timing belt. I did have a front motor mount install - vibration be the cause? That's possible - but only the gremlins really know.

Still something to look at and be aware of since it happened to me.

Maybe a pissed off tech/service manager from Mits didn't like the fact I called them out twice on two coupons they sent in the mail for a $30 oil change for my Evo. Nothing on the flyer had a disclaimer about synthetic - which was supposed to be $30 more - so they had to eat it.
Look out - hell I could barely do it for that cheap. Oil prices have gone through the roof and Mobil 1 isn't cheap :-)

^^ It's only $22 for a 5 quart bottle at Wal-mart which is the cheapest I can find!

Well the dealer denied my warranty because of my mods. Even though I had the exact same problem, and they covered it under warranty, when I was 100% stock awhile back. I guess I'll call Mitsu and see if I can get anything done, if not I'll just let my car sound like crap I guess .

Wow, that sucks. My stealership said that they'd deny my warranty claim if they could find evidence that something had been changed/modified in the timing belt area, i.e. cams, cam gears, aftermarket belt, etc, but mods in other areas of the powertrain would not be enough to void it. I'd continue to push back if I were you. They have to prove that your mods had any sort of impact on your pulley bearings going bad before they can deny your claim. It's the law! Good luck!!!

Advisor told me the timing belt pulley may have been machined incorrectly

Maybe this should be sticky as it seems a few other IX have a similar issue?

100% stock 18,000 mile IX SE

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in on an old post.

I was having the same issue, and mitsu replaced Crankshaft blade and timing belt just like this one... Problem solved at least for now.

While I hope everyone understands that we may not all be having the "exact" same noise, the one I was having was fixed by replacing those parts, which mitsu warrantied.

BTW this was on my IX GSR that has about 32K on it.

Nope. I called Glendale Mitsubishi and they're "aware" of the issue, but the guy I spoke to wouldn't commit to anything over the phone to recommend it to another Mitsu dealership. He just recommended that you have your local dealership contact the Mitsu. Tech Line, which leads me to speculate that Mitsu. as a whole is aware of the issue, but just ignoring it at this point so they don't have to open a TSB and pay for all of the Evo repairs. It's easier to just wait for us to bring in our modded Evo's and deny our warranty claims right?

Just to update:

I took it to Veracom Mitsubishi in San Mateo. The tech tried to say that the cam gears have been taken off before and denied my warranty. Then they wanted to charge me $150 for the diagnostic, in which, they didn't even take anything apart to look at other than the cam gear cover. I called 1-866-MITSU2009 to file a claim and they told me that someone from the corporate will phone me tomorrow. Will update again later.

Btw, mods are injectors, fuel pump, intake filter, TBE, boost solenoid and tune.

Edit: The cam gears were NEVER taken off before.

Wow, I'd be livid. Good luck and keep us posted. I'm interested to hear how that call back turns out.

Another update:

Mitsu corp called me in the afternoon and warned me that if I wanted to continue with the repairs, then I will have to authorize the teardown. They also said that I will have to pay for the teardown IF the cause of the defect is due to my mods. The cost just to take everything apart is about $600, plus the $300 diagnostic fee, plus however much to slap it back together if warranty decides not to cover this issue. I told them to go ahead and tear it down.

Well, how sure are you that the problem is related to the timing belt area? Remember that they have to prove that the failure was caused by your mods before they can stick you with the bill for all of the work done on the repair. To me, this sounds like an idle threat to see just how sure you are that you didn't modify that area of the car.

I'm very sure that the problem is related to the timing belt area. It sounds exactly like the noise within the video. And yes, I too believe that it was just an idle threat, and thus, I had them continue the work on the car. I'll keep you guys updated.
