I'm extremely **** retentive about not overfilling, so I usually put 4.5 qts. to start, drive it around to cycle everything through, and then top it off the next morning so it's level with the top mark on the dipstick. That usually equates to about 4.7-4.8 qts. total.

Yep. Oil level and oil quality have zero impact on the scraping noise my car makes.....which is identical to the youtube clip in the OP's 1st post.

If that's the case, then he had a different issue. All you need to do to make sure is remove your accessory belt. If it still makes the noise, then it's not one of the accessory pulleys. If it goes away, then your Evo likely has the same problem as your friend's.

That's the point. If the noise goes away when the belt is off, then you know it's one of the pulleys. If not, then then you know it's behind the Timing Belt cover.

No problem. It's not easy to explain, so I understand. And....yes, it's safe to run the motor without the accessory belt attached, but not for long, since the alternator won't be charging your battery with it off. More or less, you just want to take it off, fire up the car, take a listen to see if the noise is still there, and then turn it off so you can put the belt back on. Definitely no driving without it on though.

it doesnt have to do with warm, or cold. it does it all the time. its not the whinning, its the scraping/rubbing sound.

i think people are getting confused....

it will do it when the car is fully warmed too!

What he said. Mine makes the scraping/rubbing noise most noticeably when it's really cold or really hot though.
