Mine only does it on initial start up when the engine is cold. After about 15 min of driving the scraping noise goes away and only comes back when the car is started again and the engine is completely cold.

I sent a letter to Mitsubishi of America and they have now called me and want to talk about the noise. (For me I have had the belt replace 2 times and the noise is louder than ever).
It looks like I will be able to get some sort of resolution. What they can do (which I read before considering the lemon law) is give me my money back , and a percentage of that goes to the dealer. With the price of used EVO's going down. I can find a fully built EVO 8 for about $20,000. Might be a good time to buy if I can return the EVO 9. I'll let you know what they tell me.

Agreed. My hope is that Mitsubishi decides to spend some R&D money to determine root cause, and then find a permanent fix.

Plus one, it's worth it to put the car in the air and pull the drain plug for just a second, the extra pressure will find a way out if not.

I just got off the phone with Mitsu of America and they want me to take my car back for the 4th time (Belt 1 was 12/4/08, belt 2 was 1/30/09, (on that same day I brought it back for a 3rd time for the VVT solenoid CE light).

This time they are opening a "tech case". Lets hope they figure something out. I will let you know what happens. I think I am going to ask that all of the old parts are returned to me...Then they give me the entire motor...lol

Awesome. Good luck! You'd think maybe 2nd or 3rd time would have been the charm. Guess not with Mitsu.

From the video it kind of sounds like metal on metal.

That sound makes me cringe

Yah, in the morning it sounds like a choo-choo train now. I have to drive slowly down a long alley out of my condo and there is a fence to the right, so I lower the right window and curse to myself as I listen to it...

Also, just after I turn it off, the noise seems to be longer duration until the motor stops spinning, almost like the pressure is off of something and its "free-wheeling". Very odd...

Ok well Mitsu just called me the problem was, in fact the accessory belt. I told him I did not believe him and I said "let it sit over night and start it in the morning and let me know if it still does it." (I actually put the belt on it this time a few thousands miles ago) and they cleaned the belt and the sound is supposedly gone. So if it comes back, then it appears that area needs to be cleaned out and watched more often.

1/29: Just got it back and they say that it was indeed the accessory belt. It is silent now. So everyone take off your belts and clean them up! Or have the dealer do it.

1/30/: Ok I have more info. I looked at the belt and touched it. It appears the mechanic put a layer of Grease on the bottom of the belt. Is this standard? I have never done this on any of my cars.

Can someone suggest about my issue?
I have the same (or about the same noise like the metal on metal rotating scratch) but...it is RPM dependent. The noise become noticable at 2.5-3k RPM, the loudest is about 3.8k rpm and goes down after 4.5k RPM. I must notice that I do not have rear ballance shaft at all and front balance shaft eliminator. The engine is 2.3L. Hovewer the noise follow me since the stock motor. I hope it will go away after complete rebuild of the motor but it is not.
