No major mods done recently... 22k mileage evo 9 gsr... At first I was thinkin tat it might be an exhaust leak or somethin cos I've tried a new down pipe I realise the sound felt like it was comin from the pulley side of the engine bay... I can only hear it inside the car cos my exhaust is alittle loud outside... Been rainin very often this few days tat was when the sound started to happen

No idea today the sound changed abit... When I'm acceleratin around 2-2.5k rpm there is a slight grinding sound felt... Last night when I look into the engine bay I realised there was a pully tat seems abit wrap when it was turning... Tat pully is located quite deep in quite near the alternator...

Just a little update. i had the metal scraping noise either cold, warm, etc etc.

just did a timing belt and replaced serp belt. noise is gone so far. ive put a 1000 miles on it thus far no issues. only non oem part was a gates serp. belt.

Parts replaced:
OEM timing belt
OEM balancer belt

OEM tensioner
OEM water pump
Gates serp. belt

^thanks for the update, but u have changed a # of things, so it could be either one of them.
did u inspect the parts u have replaced to see if any of them is scraping againts something (after taking off the belt, and beofre taking them off the engine)?

yes, first thing i did was inspect the t-belt for wear/rubbing. not a thing on it. That would leave either the t-belt or the serp belt.

+1 for this, my car makes that annoying noise on cold start and goes away after it's warmed up. Had no idea it was such a common problem until I saw this thread.

Just replaced my timing/accessory belts, pulleys, tensioners, and crankshaft blade. No more noise. You can clearly see where the old pieces were rubbing against the crankshaft blade. Mine didn't start making noise until around 45K miles.

One easy way to see if it is your accessory drive belt is this: take a piece of regular old chalkboard chalk, and, with a pair of pliers (long needlenose preferably) apply chalk to the ribbed and smooth side of the belt. This should eliminate the noise for a long time. If the noise goes away, it is your accessory belt. If not, it's something else. My noise on my IX is the accessory belt, but when I apply chalk to it, it's only quiet for an hour or so, then goes right back to squealing. I replaced the belt and still have the same noise. Apply chalk again, noise if gone for an hour or so. Took it to the dealer under warranty (a 4+ hour drive for me). They replaced the belt idler pulley. The next morning, the same noise occurs again, so I call the dealer. They have me bring it back (thankfully I stayed in town for a couple days), only to tell me that they can't hear the noise. This is what I am thinking is going on with my car: When cold, the belt squeals because the tensioner is weak, making the belt loose. As the engine warms up and parts start to expand, the belt gets tighter and eliminates the noise. There is a procedure to check the belt tensioner which I wil do this weekend.

I have the same problem and it your torsion damper, also known as a tension pulley. It keeps the tension of the serp belt.
