I took my car to the dealer for this issue and they said that they have seen TONS of Evo's with this problem. Argh....they said that Mitsu just issued a Tech Service Bulletin on it that details out that the engine mount plate on the front of the front engine cover has been machined incorrectly by Mitsu's vendor and that a corrected part is being rolled out. The delaer is having to call corporate to see about getting the new plate. I'm trying to get a copy of the TSB but the dealer is not being very cooperative. Unfortunately Mitsu is leaning towards not covering this under warranty for my car (because I have an ACT clutch and the restrictor pill removed and they want to void my entire warranty just for that) so I'm looking at pulling the car back from the dealer and digging into this myself. ARGH......

On a side note I also asked the dealer about replacing my calipers wih the peeling and fading paint and they said "We'll ask but don't count on it.....It's standard practice for Mitsu to only replace them for cars that are still owned by their original owner" Seriously.... Mitsu Service = pile of fresh elephant ****e

please post the TSB if possible. I HATE....let me say that again... HATE my local Mitsu dealership. Any finite documentation that you have would be very helpful.

I filed with NHTSA.

I just talked to my dealer in MI, and unfortunatly we couldn't find any TSB's on this issue. check and see if u could atleast get the TSB# atleast so maybe we could pull it up that way.
Thanks

Update: I spoke to the Service Advisor at the dealership and they are going to cover my repair under warranty seeing as how the issue isn't directly related to the clutch. He said that the tech is wrong and that "officially there is no tech bulletin for this issue" but there is a new bracket that fixes it and that is what's going in the car. He's going to get me the part number when I pick up the car in a couple of days. As soon as I get the number I'll post it up for everybody. Apparently it's interfacing with the timing belt because they're going to have to change it out to put the new bracket in.

Thanks

^^^^^ If your dealer is anything like mine, probably not covered under warranty.
They're still not done with the car but now they're saying that the aftermarket pressure plate/clutch with it's high clamp load (ACT HDSS) is putting too much tension on the crankshaft and thus displacing the crankshaft which caused the issue.....and now they might not warranty it. Ummmm ok then Mr. Dealer....
1.) then why the new bracket from Mitsu?
2.) why does it only make the noise when it's going through cold start sequence when the clutch and pressure plate has the high clamp load ALL the time?
3.) why does it still occur after pushing the clutch in?
4.) why has it done it from day 1 of owning my car?
5.) why does almost every Evo have this noise regardless of clutch setup (stock or not)?
6.) why do you guys even have thrust bearings on the cranks if they don't do anything at all (apparently)?
7.) didn't you guys get rid of crank walk?

What sucks is that tomorrow morning I have to leave town for 10 days and they'll have my car the whole time monkeying around with it.....

Everyone,

I had an identical noise, and I mean identical, as the one in the video for about 10k miles. I suspected timing belt, as many others have revealed in this thread- and fixed- be it temporarily or permanently, so I just put up with it.

My noise ended abruptly (at about 10 m.p.h. no less) when the pulley popped clean off of the water pump. I don't mean improperly-torqued 10mm holding bolts either. I mean the pressed-on pulley flange (which pulley bolts to) finally vibrated itself completely off the water pump's shaft.

I don't know what caused this; could have been improper serpentine tension, a mechanical flaw or insufficient bolt torque, the last of which would have thrown the pulley's balance off, I figure. Sucks that I don't know this. But I know this: when that pulley popped off, my car hummed nice and quietly...at least until the car started to get hot from the lack of coolant circulation and needed to be shut off.

Evolution Dynamics here in the DFW area (Lewisville) performed an entire 60K replacement on all timing-related components since the Tbelt needs to come off anyway. After nearly 1,000 miles, there's no more rattling.

For those that don't find relief in your IX timing belt reconfiguration fiasco, this could be it. For reference however, I have an '05 VIII. Good luck.

Timeline for my IX, brought to dealership at:

18k "lubed" belt
20k replaced timing belt
40k noise has returned

So a timing belt will likely not solve the problem. Hopefully a fix gets found and TSB issued, this noise is very annoying

Is the CBRD Crankshaft Angle Sensing Blade made differently than the OEM one so that it doesn't rum against the Timing Belt?
These were all OEM Mitsubishi parts. CBRD does not have anything that will fix this problem. I simply ordered the Crankshaft Angle Sensing Blade and corresponding parts through them.

I still can barely hear the sound when the car is warming up, but once it's warm, it goes away. I think after time it'll come back.

Appreciate if you could share with us.

I might follow your step if everything good from your side.
I can still faintly hear the sound during warm up. Once the car is warmed up the sound goes away. I'll listen for it again tomorrow when I get to work.

I'm very interested in this new bracket. Please get us that part number and any other info possible. Try to see if you can snap a photo of the part before it's installed.

Dealership called yesterday and they finally finished the car. They replaced the bracket as well as the crankshaft sensor blade due to the timing belt rubbing on it. I'll get the bracket part number for everybody on the 28th when I pick up the car.
