I had similar sound for almost a year, and i don't even bother it, i'm on nearly 50k.
It happened to be even more louder when the car haven't been started or drove for few days. Once happen to me when i went back my hometown and leave the car for a week. After come back, i started the car, and the sound was very noticeable and loud, it sounded like an old junk car xD. For now, it will sound when cold start, and when the engine became hot, the sound eventually gone.

And today, i noticed a weird sound that's why i came to this post and read through mostly all the pages and it seems unrelated.

Here's my situation. I got my camshaft upgraded to s1 yesterday, and while in the process of dissembling, we found that the serpentine belt (that used to run alternator, compressor, etc) has worned out ( teared off at the middle). So i got it replace to a new one. Before that, it used to create a sound like 'tack tack tack' whenever i engaged gear and slowly move. First was not that obvious, and it slowly getting obvious day-by-day and i've it checked, we thought it was the timing belt tensioner that is going to worn, so we don bother it. After replacing, and the 'tack tack tack' sound gone. So the sound culprit is the worn serpentine belt.

To cut the story short, now i got a new weird sound. Is like an airplane sound (like when a car audio has lack of earth power), when i press the throttle once, the sound became louder, and slowly minimize and went off after rpm drop til 1k. Notice the sound coming from the pulley+belt side.

I just changed my serpentine belt, and tighten my timing belt (we found out it was loosen when dissembling yesterday). And also an upgrade on the camshaft, which i don't think is related.

Anyone can help?

Oh well, problem solved, is due to the size of serpentine belt in used.

Yes and I have one for sale because I sold my evo. If you look above, Positron said the noise is now gone. Also look at how the bracket is cut(machined) There clearances are there.

Is it possible to use a bracket from an evo 8 or are they different? I know only the 9s suffer from this sound so using a bracket from an 8, if it fits, should solve the problem.

To those still following:

A couple of days ago i washed my car and decided to wash off the undercarriage too. I sprayed water from underneath the car under the front end to get the dirt off. Since then, i havent noticed the noise whatsoever even on cold morning starts when the noise was most prominant.

I still have all the timing covers on along with the undertray. I duno if/when the noise will come back, but i will keep you guys updated. For the last couple of days the noise is non existent so far. Its possible that i could of knocked out some grime/dirt that was causing the noise.

I did not wash the engine yet, but i will as soon as winter/cold weather is over.

answer...

Just incase anyone hasn't read all the posts i'll confirm what they said... its the belt... should fix most of that sound... if theres is a slite skweeky sound it is the barrings on the back of tensor or idle pully... I had problem at 37,200 miles changed the belt at 37500 and problem solved.. The belts that Mitsu. used are supposed to be more durable how ever can make noise at times..

When the noise started I took my car to the auto hobby shop on base an put her up on the lift. it seemed that the noise was more prevelent from underneath the car. I was convinced that the noise was comming from the timing belt/accessory belt area somewhere forward of the water pump pulley. For almost 7 months I lived with that noise untill just recently when I pulled my head off to install a set of ARP studs along with BC springs/retainers and Cosworth cams. Anyway, when I pulled the accessory belt and took off the tensioner and idler pulley - I found where that noise was comming from. The noise was comming from the accessory belt idler pulley. After I removed the pulley, I gave it a few spins and it did'nt feel very smooth so I sprayed the back of the pulley with wd40 and it felt alot better when I spun it. The pulley has to come off in order to spray the bearing. After I put my car back together - the noise was totally gone. This pulley bolts to the block and is pretty much forward of the water pump pulley and down a little. After removing the accessory belt, you can't miss it. I suggest removing the accessory belt and giving that idler pulley a spin. If the pulley feels rough when you spin it, take it off and soak the rear where the bearing is with wd40 or something. I can't say for sure that the idler pulley is the culprit, but I'm about 75% sure it was. I also replaced my timing belt/balance shaft belt with the Greddy belts but I don't think the factory belts were making that noise. Everything else in the accessory/timing belt areas looked normal. The idler pulley was the only thing I found that needed attention.

Open up the hood.. it should come from the passenger side of the engine.. where
the noise could come from any of those belt/pulleys or timing belt.

I saw the old belt that dealer pulled out... looks NEW... dealer cant tell me
what was wrong with belt (as expected, my car has only 13k), just said it
was the belt making noise.

hope this helps... depending on the difference in noise is what else it may be but most of the time it seems like problem in the belt, pulleys or something minor related.. Nothing $$$$ killer just labor / time...

I've read through the whole thread and noticed that no one has spoken about failures around either the belt or the pulley. Is it safe to say that although the sound is annoying...it's not anything that will actually harm the car?

I'm about to hit 30K and the sound started about 500 miles ago...trying to hold off on doing a TB until it's completely necessary. Honestly I can live with the sound.

I think that's pretty safe to say. I've been following this issue for a VERY long time, since I've had this noise occur intermittently on my 2nd Evo for over 2 years now, and to date I have not heard of anyone having a TB failure due to whatever is causing the belt noise.

I inspected the TB this weekend...everything seemed normal, no uneven wear or fraying at all. I'm getting the "washing machine" sound and sometimes get the bird chirping sound. Although it's a bit unnerving...it's not on my to do list since my miles are relatively low.
