Well I took off the cam gear cover and guess what? Her blue Gates belt was shredding itself on the inside !!! Side where crank sensor blade is. It was nearly torn in two in a few spots !!! Good thing it was the reinforced belt !!! You can see her belt jumping between the cam gears it was so bad !!!

Anywho. we ordered the revised parts in this thread and looking at the pulley bracket from the SIDE you can see it has been changed. The idler pulley position is changed and several other places have material removed.

I'm replacing that bracket, the tensioner and the crank sensor blade today/tomorrow will let you know the outcome.

Part Number MR984375 Adjuster, Timing Belt Tension Qty 1
Part Number MD369999 Pulley, Timing Belt Tension Qty 1
Part Number 1091A133 Bracket Cylinder Block Qty 1 *****Updated New Part from Mitsu that supposedly fixes the noise problem. Original bracket was machined incorrectly by supplier to Mitsu*****

and this is the crank blade I'm using: MD190865

DON'T IGNORE THAT SOUND!!! I thought I took pix...can't seem to find them now though.

B

ps: belts are supposed to be DRY !!! NEVER put any dressing on a belt. That only MASKS the problem. Like waxing a faded car. The paint
still is bad. You just don't see it for a few months.
these parts will fix the problem. been without the noise for over a year now. dont ignore it. suck it up and replace the parts end of story

Not sure if I posted this video in the previous pages. But I did the 60k stuff including the updated IX bracket and HKS belt and gear. The noise never occurred again and then I sold my car a year later.

LOL....read the thread.....it is the cylinder bracket, Mitsubishi even revised their design because of it. The problem is that the timing belt ends up hitting the blade on the crank sensor and if not fixed it will cause timing belt failure eventually and these are interference motors so.....

I have read the first 20 pages of this thread
Noticed that there are different noises coming from the same timing belt area.

My issue

Just built my Evo 8s engine after 30K , when the car is idling this noise is there after 20 mins of driving or idling the noise goes away automatically. I installed a new gates belt, i had problems with setting the tensioner in the right position it just wont behave like it did before i had the stock timing belt.
I just want to know if some one experienced any failure because of this noise ?
ill take the timing cover off and inspect it myself after driving it for a few more kilometers so that if there is any wear n tear on the belt , it becomes evident.

I had issues with the gates belt. It was rubbing so I swapped it out for a greddy belt.

Update:

Today drove around for 10 kms, the noise again came back.

People using WD40 on the tensioner is not recommended at all, it will clear the rust but it also widens the clearance and hence more problem. I have very little slack on the gates belt. I never new changing a belt would become such pain in the @** .

Another probable cause may be the auto tensioner not working.

That sound sure sounds like a dry bearing to me. Have you cleaned the engine compartment with an engine degreaser of strong solvent in the recent past? That could dry out bearings like the one found in your belt tensioner. I'd say this is unrelated to any problems that would result from over filling the engine oil.

Yes, I used kerosene oil for cleaning purpose. Before the build the car never had this sound, its been 2 months since the engine was lieing around because of my work and also due to the delay in parts. May be that has some thing to do with it.
Btw my serpentine belt is old too so i am going to change that as well. Ill complete my initial 100 km running in and then take out the belt and inspect the whole assembly to check what is the issue.

Oh i forgot to mention ! the sound seems periodic as if the belt passes through a certain area and squeeks.

Your problem is different, this issue only affected Evo IX.
Check your tensioner pulleys
