IX Engine idle noise (belt?) (video)
super glad I found this thread. Started the car this evening for a drive to get some grub. Idle is lumpy so I pay no attention initially. Sit in a parking lot at idle with the windows up i hear an underhood noise. Very faint, I push the clutch to make the clutch noise go away so i can hear this new sound. It sounds like a soft diesel engine under my hood. I pop the hood and rev...can't hear it now. Only inside. Volume does not increase with rpm, but freq does. I am maybe 1/4qt overfull with M1 5-30. Its not lifters, or injectors(unless 780's make way more noise).
New page so I thought I'd post this again
Lets keep on keepin on
We are all agreed. We need to keep this thread to the point though. Anyone who see this please look back to post #334 to understand what we are doing. Read then report your problem to NHTSA to get a recall on these busted parts on our IX's
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm
It doesn't affect all IX's from what I can tell... but it does affect over 40 of us here... That means there has to be several people who have
A. Not paid attention to the problem
B. Live in the year round heat and its not noticeable like me
C. Fixed it themselves thinking they were the ones who broke it
or D. Doesn't have the problem
Seems very common though. I hope whoever read this checks out their car. The sound comes from behind the engine on the passenger side around all the belts. It can sound like a grinding sound, loud ticking, or a rubbing sound. Hope this helps!

This just started on me today, coldest start up ever for this ride since it was hatched in Texas. I immediately thought it was the timing belt or cam gears. Glad to know i was in the right area. I'll make sure to file a complaint with mitsu.
mine only does it when its cold the first 10 min running then goes away. I was thinking timing belt. I have 60k but mine has been doing since 40k still is fine just annoying in the morning
I am thinking about filing the Lemon Law.
I'd like to trade for an EVO X. How can I do that with this noise? The dealer will say "OMG WTF IS THAT?? YOUR TIMING BELT IS BAD!!!" That knocks of $5000 right there....weak.
Also, maybe this is posted already, but the Mitsu 1-800 number now charges $2.79 to hook to a "call center" or some sh#t.
Also, I filed a report with the above link

I have the same nose at idle. I live in FL, and since I can remember -I am the first owner of my IX MR- it has made that nose. It does it all times of the year, only on cold start up (car sits longer than 4-5 hours, overnight, or long enough to allow most if not all ambient engine temperatures within the engine bay to dissipate*. The nose fades away once the car heats up, and it does this every time. It's consistency leads me to believe it's likely normally, especially since the only con to the noise, is the noise itself. I don't notice anything else, however, I have had electrical problems before where my engine would shut during disengaging of the clutch - the car would just shut off. It would immediately restart, like normal, without any codes being thrown. This thing, although retched sounding, worries me little, because since I replace my battery, that sudden stalling of the engine has all but disappeared, but I if I had to guess what it might be, I guess it's alternator, or I guess I don't care hehe... 47,000 miles, and its still going strong. If it were bad to begin with, I don't think this community, let alone myself, would have allowed this annoying sound to persist and remain if it weren't a part of its normal operation. Who knows, but thank god I'm not the only EVO IX owner with this sound, I truly thought I might a problem - for the warranty to fix, please
just had my car at the dealer for this problem and it was the harmonic dampner. it broke around the rubber between the metal. they also found a gear on the timing belt i believe was junk also. no sounds anymore
the downside to this is that there have been many of things to have solved this issue. nothing has really been narrowed down. some guys had a belt do it and others were pullies, balancers, etc. i dont think we'll see something from mitsu anytime soon. i know they wont recall it to change everything mentioned. this is going to be ongoing.

Well, yeh, I mean it's been years since the CT9A was produced, so to suddenly have Mitsu. fix the problem, they are more likely to move on this issue slowly simply because their main focus is likely going to be on improving the new EVO, over the old. Though if Mitsu. wants their loyal EVO owners to trade up to the new EVO, it might be wise to work with the owners in the hope they don't feel discouraged to buy a new EVO with the assumption that they might have to haggle the dealer for warranty repair items. Then again, there is probably a lot more politics involved both at the dealer, and at the manufacturer, making it hard or even a chore to get legit warranty items replaced without any hassle.
