I wonder if there is a certain born date on the cars that have this problem. I'll post mine when I see it this weekend.

Well I guess I'm the newest member of this elite club. My car is not a daily driver so it started about a month ago and I've been listening everytime I start it to see if it's there.... and it's got louder since it first start and sounds exactly like the videos posted. This sucks. I have absolutly no problem reading this entire thread, but can someone save 30min of my life and tell me if a proven solution has been found for this and if so what is required in terms of parts. Thanks in advance.

Anyone else got this noise?
Sounds like noise came from the belts
(or at least coming from that side of the engine).

Car/engine is stock... noise started around a week ago.
Only thing I think can of is that overfill the engine oil a little bit.
I have this EXACT same noise.

I first noticed the sound after doing a bunch of datalogging pulls. I figured the motor was really hot and things expanded due to the extreme heat or something. Well this winter the car has started making the sound all the time.
When I first start the car it sounds pretty normal, but a minute or so later, the sound starts and it's ANNOYING. My car sounds friggin ghetto and it's starting to get kind of embarrassing. Instead of hearing that nice exhaust rumble when I'm at idle, I now have this loud *** annoying rotating washing machine sound and I can hear it from inside the car. WTF!

Any fixes for this at all? I haven't read any!

-Jalal

I'm in the same boat, it's almost embarassing to start the car up now... but have not found any true solution.

I'm also starting to wonder if this is safe or not. I'm coming up on my 60k service, so hopefully that will take care of the noise (even though I've heard that changing things doesn't really fix the problem).

Blah.

My IX has been making this noise since 5k miles, and it now has 43k on it. It also makes a rapid ticking noise accelerating between 1500-2500 rpms. I wonder if it's somehow related. Anyway, I've been reluctant to take it to the dealer, especially since it's been doing it for 38k miles with no problems.

while mine doesn't make a washing machine sound, the sound I get is more of a squeaking like a loose pulley or something. It is very loud when the motor is cold and once the motor is all warmed up, you can't really hear it. Its been doing it ever since I got the car so I guess I'll just keep going till I hit my 60k and hopefully doing the 60k will eliminate this sound.

It doesn't affect all IX's from what I can tell... but it does affect over 40 of us here... That means there has to be several people who have

A. Not paid attention to the problem
B. Live in the year round heat and its not noticeable like me
C. Fixed it themselves thinking they were the ones who broke it
or D. Doesn't have the problem

Seems very common though. I hope whoever read this checks out their car. The sound comes from behind the engine on the passenger side around all the belts. It can sound like a grinding sound, loud ticking, or a rubbing sound. Hope this helps!

Just letting those know who haven't made a complaint to this and their dealership already to get both done as I have. The more the merrier. Seriously, make a complaint here, then to Mitsubishi. If nothing else lets get a TSB out for your cars so we at least have a OEM part to fix this problem.. There have been something like 10 compaints to NHTSA, keep em coming and we will see something done.

Just filed my NHTSA complaint as well.

Question - would this be covered under the 5 year/60k powertrain warranty for a second owner? If so, I'm going to go bother the dealership about this too.

100% yes this will be covered by your 5 year 60K warranty.
