IX Engine idle noise (belt?) (video)
You're right. The burden of proof is on them. Maybe I'm just too cynical, but I bet that Mitsu could find a way to put the blame on just about any performance mod......even an exhaust.
you have a point but then if your willing and up for a long battle then you can get your way as long as the mod had nothing to do with it. and i think thats were Mitsu wins is when the person gets overwhelmed or tired of dealing with it. Car companies have to get that if they are offering a $30K + car and there some after market support for them the car will probably get modded. now i also understand you cant mod the **** out of it and boost it to high heaven and expect them to take care of you. but normal bolts not to include cams should have no bearing on the timing belt.
We are all agreed. We need to keep this thread to the point though. Anyone who see this please look back to post #334 to understand what we are doing. Read then report your problem to NHTSA to get a recall on these busted parts on our IX's

It doesn't affect all IX's from what I can tell... but it does affect over 40 of us here... That means there has to be several people who have
A. Not paid attention to the problem
B. Live in the year round heat and its not noticeable like me
C. Fixed it themselves thinking they were the ones who broke it
or D. Doesn't have the problem
Seems very common though. I hope whoever read this checks out their car. The sound comes from behind the engine on the passenger side around all the belts. It can sound like a grinding sound, loud ticking, or a rubbing sound. Hope this helps!

If you have a IX it would still be under warranty to have the dealership stry and fix it i'd think. If you wanted to do it yourself 21Evo-lution many have tried but only a few.. seemed to have actually fixed the problem... if they even did.
Seems to be the most normal fix, just read over the threads.. see what you think works.
Thanks for the complaints guys!!! Lets keep it up!!
I just fixed one on a IX, replaced tensioner pulley (part of front engine mount) real pain in the butt must remove p/s pump and bracket, crank sensor blade and timing belt. timing belt is walking towards back of engine and rubbing/cutting into the crank sensor blade. you will find noticable wear on blade from belt rubbing excessively and belt will be worn to where you see nylon cords showing in certain areas

i dunno about that....im just over 60k....so im out of warranty. i think LOTS of people are gonna be close. If they do come out with a fix...itll likely be a TSB not a recall, and by the time it all happens many people will be out of warranty.
All I can hope is since this seems to affect the timing belt it will be a lil more then a tsb.
One hope is if all of us including yourself file a complaint at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm and act worried about your safety. It could be good.
Second, at least we'll know what needs replaced if nothing else. I mean truthfully I have yet to see a fix thats worked 100% of the time.
