Great. I'd do the same thing. Good luck!

Hey Sfkn2,

Not sure if you did or not but you might want to read my post #293 and have them check those parts. Mitsu wanted to tear my head off because they thought it was something "internal" until I made them check those things first. Turns out the guy I quoted was right. The crankshaft blade was my issue. Just a thought before you get abused by the "your mods caused this" famous last words by your dealership.

Hey guys, another update. So they tore everything apart in the timing belt area and it IS the crank sensor part that's being hit. Last week when I told them that it MAY be that issue, they said that if the crank sensor was damaged, then the car wouldn't run. BAM. Now they're calling the Mitsu reps to see if they can get it fixed under warranty. I'm pretty sure I got this now.

Imagine that!!! I think Mitsu dealerships tend to mistake the Evo community as a bunch of technically uneducated ricers instead of true enthusiasts that know a thing or two about the cars we own. Glad to hear that they were able to follow directions.

Mitsubishi corporate returned my call. The timing belt and such will be changed under warranty. The battle is now over.

I can expect to have the car back by Friday.

Last and final update: I got the car back last Friday 10/9/09. They only replaced the crank sensor and the crankshaft blades, but DID NOT replace my timing belt. I've only put about 40 miles on the car so far and the car is much quieter now. So far so good. I'm also sending a few other Evo IX owners locally to that dealership since they know what's going on now.

I've had my car in a 1/2 a dozen times but it never makes the noise while it's there. Even left it for 4 days and let them start it up every day. Now it only seams to happen after I've been driving it hard. Then when I stop to let the car cool down I hear it while the car is idling. I've even raced up and down the streets near the dealership to try to get the noise to come back but no luck.

i took my car to a dealership that was 3.5 hrs away. the morning of it made the noise then i took the drive and after that it never made the noise again. the dealership was stumped. i would call everyday and see if they got it to make the noise but no luck. till this day the noise hasnt come back. these cars are relatively noisey but it hink i can somewhat hear a faint version of the sound sometimes. i'm saving up for a timing belt replacement and i plan on replacing everything in that area. better safe than sorry.

you should get with your dealer ship to see if they can spread the word to other dealerships around the country so that they can all be on the same page. the dealership i went to had no idea of this issue

Out of curiousity, is your car modded?

Yes, though nothing in the belt areas - no cams, no cam gears.. etc.

Dealer to me: "We cannot fix it."
I have had the Timing belt replaced 3 times now with in the last 2 years and the noise continues. It started at 20,000 miles and I am now at 35,000 miles. The Svc. rep told me that other Evo's do it and they cannot figure out what the problem is.

The only "mod" I have is a bigger FMIC. I guess I will take it to another dealer and ask them if they can fix it...

Good luck, mine did the same and the noise returned...

Exact same symptoms with me. It will drive you crazy. It goes away for a few months, then one morning its starts ticking like a piston is hitting a valve. Then it goes away when its warm. Then the next morning its gone...A few months later its back and the process repeats...
