IX Engine idle noise (belt?) (video)
Well I'm glad this is taking off pretty well. There are several complaints and growing. I hope we see something come from this. On a funny note I will be able to post up a second complaint for the pure fact I totaled my Evo IX MR over this last week. I will be getting a new one here next week or so. Even though this problem is bull i still love my IX.
So yea if you guys need some parts https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sa...speed-19k.html . The only things damaged are the ACD pump and the drivers side front, and tranny. Along with the passenger rear and trunk lid. Everything else in the car is pretty much in working order to my knowledge. Send the guys some pm's!

We are all agreed. We need to keep this thread to the point though. Anyone who see this please look back to post #334 to understand what we are doing. Read then report your problem to NHTSA to get a recall on these busted parts on our IX's

It doesn't affect all IX's from what I can tell... but it does affect over 40 of us here... That means there has to be several people who have
A. Not paid attention to the problem
B. Live in the year round heat and its not noticeable like me
C. Fixed it themselves thinking they were the ones who broke it
or D. Doesn't have the problem
Seems very common though. I hope whoever read this checks out their car. The sound comes from behind the engine on the passenger side around all the belts. It can sound like a grinding sound, loud ticking, or a rubbing sound. Hope this helps!

Yea, I'm pretty good, evo took a nasty hit but its all good. I found another IX with like 3k miles, d/p today, looking good. Not graphite gray, but w/e. I still love it.
3K miles? I thought I did well to find a used one with 18.5K miles. Better post up some pics.
Is the crankshaft blade the same as the crank position sensor listed on Mitsubishiparts.com? My car started making the noise about 5k miles ago. I'm at 55k now, so I guess I was lucky to make it that long. I've purchased all new belts, pulleys, and tensioners, but I also want to replace the crankshaft blade, since it seems to be related to the scraping issue. I just don't see a "crankshaft blade" listed anywhere.
Maybe to narrow this down, we should post a video of the sound it makes before it gets fixed. This way we can identify if something sounds slightly different and we're not debating the same fix to different problems.
Hey,ive had this problem for about 2 months right around start of the cold weather here in Pa.My problem definitely has to do with the belt rubbing on the sensing blade. How i tested it was by taking the top timing cover off and moving the belt over about 1 mm,turned the car on and no noise.I let it run for a little and kept my eye on the belt and watched it track back towards the engine, noise returned. Now im about to replace all the parts needed, just need to know the part number for the sensing blade and tensioner arm? Also does anybody know if the parts Mitsubishi sells now are different then what came on the car originally?

here is a vid i took of mine when it did the noise.
a couple of weeks back the noise was coming back. especially with the colder weather outside. i took of the cover and started the car. noticed a mark on the timing belt. so i started to spary the belt with some belt conditioner and with a rag i directed it to where i wanted and the noise went away. i'm planning on replacing everything and might as well install cams in there too. hopefully nothing happens until i can get that done.

Ok folks,
i have fitted some cams recently and i replaced my complete cambelt kit, including the main belt and the balancer and all the pullies.
My car was also making the very same noise,
The problem above is definately caused by the balancer belt rubbing off the sensing blade. The problem appears to be the design of the sensing blade itself and, replacing it i do not think it will solve the issue. Sensing blade when fitted its very close to a balancer belt, and if theres a small play or movement in the belt it will rub and make the noise.
I also took some photos for you to see the problem and that this is definately the main issue with timing belt noises.
balancer belt,

you can see the sprocket end marks caused by the belt rubbing of the sensing blade

zoom in, see the marks caused by the belt???

Excellent work! I had heard it was that before now. Too bad it makes such an annoying noise.
