When I had this problem with my old EVO I used CRC belt conditioner. It actually made more noise for a little while and than it went away after a few weeks and I never heard the noise again even until the day I got rid of the EVO.

We often do a test to confirm cas plate scraping belt edge.
And a pen of dri lube or door cleck grease just touched on the inside edge of the belt while running often confirms suspicions.
And is most likely the tensioner pivot arm bush twisting or any other misaligned bearings.
sorry if its already been mentioned.
But not always a major concern if it goes away.
I would inspect the belt edge periodically if your concerned.

This is going to sound really stupid, but I removed my AC this winter and put on a new shorter acces. belt and did a bunch of other engine work (none of which involve the timing belt area) and now my noise is gone? I highly doubt it is fixed but I'll report back after a few weeks of use or if the noise comes back before hand.

1. Can this belt be used even if you still have the A/C on the car?

2. Where would one acquire such a belt?

As I thought, the noise came back after a few hot/cold cycles. I knew it was too good to be true. lol.

To answer your questions:

1. This belt can be used with all the AC components still on the car. The belt is just shorter and it would not go around the AC pulley.

2. I got my belt from Napa. There was a AC removal thread on here I found that had listed about 4 different brand belts with their part numbers that would fit with out the AC. I think my Napa # is 25060569, I'm at work right now so I cant go check it.

Its definitely the accesory belt because I just put another belt on last week and it makes a slightly different noise than the other belt. Plus when the mechanic slapped all that grease on the underside, the noise was gone.

Either way Mitsubishi blames me because it was not a "Mitsubishi belt"

Hey Guys,

It seems I get the squealing belt noise only when it rains outside... I have a 2004 evo 8. Any ideas on how I can stop this from happening? I have about 56k and don't plan on doing a timing belt or serpentine until around 60k.

Thanks!

The problem we are having isn't the belt squealing. Its a metal on metal noise not squealing. Do you have your undertray on and all the plastic covers in the passenger side wheel well? Thats prob ur issue.

hey turboalawd,

I have been getting a more prominent sound especially when it rains. Its the metal on metal rotational sound but can you explain what that sound has to do with the plastic covers in the passenger side of the wheel well? Is it rubbing? thanks again

I think hes asking if the liners and undercover are installed because if there not water is splashing on the belt causing it to squeal.

If you dont have the liners or undercovers on, water could be splashing up and causing the belt and or pullies to be making the noise you are experiencing.
