From Motor Trend ...

Other 2006 engine minutiae include longer-threaded spark plugs (cooler-running), materially different timing belt (more durable), a cosmetic engine cover (resists heat better), and a reshaped oil ring (reduces oil consumption).

Same Noise!
Started at around 14-15K on my 06 SE. Now at 18k and its consistent. Its a random noise every 1/2 second or so from the belt area. Dealer is looking at but had to "call mitsu in CA" to investigate further because the tech didnt know what it was...Brought it in 3x for this noise in the past when it was hardly noticeable and they said it was "normal." Now its def audible from inside and outside the car. Def from the acc belt/timing belt area. Sounds like a squeal/bad bearing type noise but the car runs fine. Im 100% stock. Very **** about noises that sound like they are destroying something...
Anyone get anywhere with Mitsu or on your own with what the cause of the noise is and what will fix it?

I have the same sound on my IX. 10k miles and its still subtle... I usually hear it when my turbo timer is on and I am walking past my hood area. It's still not loud enough to bug me inside the car. Louder on colder days though. After reading this whole thread, I think Hannibal is probably the one who figured it out. I am going to go to the dealer and have them inspect and grease the idler pulley at my next scheduled maintainance. Hopefully that will solve it.

Update
Mitsu called me and they are apparently aware of this issue on some IX's. They are having the tech remove the pulley's & tensioner to send in for inspection and stated will be replaced. Anyone else have this done with any luck?

Interesting
So you got a new timing belt under warranty because of the noise? Did it go away once they replaced it? Anything else I should replace since they have to do the labor anyway (if they indeed do a timing belt?). Kinda of blows for 18k...

my nine doesnt make that noise i have exhaust and intake on it and then just small things like grounding cables and a torque damper but i have tuned the timing on my cams and i have about 23 k on my car and no you cant see my cam tune sorry friend came up with it and i cant put it up lol i understand why he would want it to be up here but back to the point mine doesnt make that noise just a tick but thats typical for a 4G63

i have the same noise as the OP on this thread, but i just assumed it was from the mechanical intake cam gear that the MIVEC uses to change cam phase... i think its normal... (i hope it is) haha! im not seeing any adverse effects (yet) 14k miles on mine....

I agree many noises are normal on this car but this one is def distinct and not something I can live with - it sounds exactly the same as the video posted on youtube in this thread. If you heard it on your car you would know it! Will keep you posted to what the dealer says it actually is...

The "noise" has gotten distinctively louder on mine as well. Been about 8k since it started last Feb. Somewhere near the reverse idler pulley/ accessory belt pulley. Had a stethescope on the cover for the harmonic balancer and could also hear it there. No adverse affects known of so far, but hoping somebody figures it out. (hint:mitsubishi)
