Question Mr. Buschur: HTA 35R with .63 hotside instead of .82?

I happen to be in need of a new compressor housing for my 35R. I have the standard dual ballbearing Garrett 35R with the .63 hotside. I've considered getting the bigger hotside too, but I'm setting my car up for street class time attacks and have to run a cat. I worried that the cat and the .82 will cost me too much spool up time and hurt boost response between shifts.

I've seen a couple of members ask and talk about this as an option, but I've never seen a definitive answer. I'll call FP tomorrow myself, but I'm not even sure if they will be open until Jan 2nd. Also, I know I could have pm'd DB but I figure there might be quite a few others that have been wondering the same thing.

So, three questions: 1. Will FP even do it? 2. Would it even work any better than a standard 4 inch housing straight from Garrett since the HTA is optimized for the bigger hotside? 3. Could there be surge issus with the smallish .63 turbine housing?

Thanks.

Maybe - See these Threads

I didn't read these threads in detail, but I believe he just swapped out the hotside side to fit the AMS kit:

Results here:

Hope this helps......

.63 should work fine, but since you have a 2.3 you might be better off with the bigger hotside. You should also consider asking about the tial compressor cover they have now, vwjeff has one and he loves it.

On 2.0's, from what I've read and seen there's about a 500rpm hit on boost threshold/spoolup when moving to the bigger hotside, but I don't recall how it affected the top-end.

Big boost, thanks for the link. Good info.

scheides, I'm in a spot where I'll need maximum early spool with big power. To give you an idea of where I'm coming from, I almost decided to go with a 3065, but I love the 35R and just want one that is maximized for early output, big midrange, ~30psi, with shifts during time attacks at ~7700rpms.

well the HTA is the way to go then; whether you stick with the smaller housing will really be up to you. You can always go with the .63 and then swap in the .86 later and see what difference it makes. Schedule some dyno time to be sure, and be sure to publish the results!

Just an update: I spoke with Robert at Forced Performance for about five minutes and he believes the gains shown on the HTA35R are also seen with the smaller .63 hotside. So, I sent it in and, according to my USPS tracking number, my turbo arrived and is now in FP's capable hands. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it does.

my t3 twin scroll gt3582r is also at fp right now get the HTA done to it. i'm running the divided .78ar housing which should be snaller than your .63 single scroll housing. so whats this with surging?? are the smaller turbine housings known to surge?
post your results when you finish

I haven't heard about any surging, I was just posing a question. I'll be sure to post up, you do the same.

Let me know smoggy, I am super/extra interested in how spool up breaks down, if you could post up your zeitronix logs of the rpm vs boost plots for individual gears that would be fantastic.

I just want to know how much of a gain it offers at lower i.e. 25-30lbs over a 35r.

Hta

I believe this is the HTA with the .63 someone I believe overlayed my chart with this one to compare the differences in spool up and power.

I have the .83 hotside.

smoggy, any updates?

I'm about to send my 35r .63 to FP for the HTA upgrade as well. I'm sure its going to spool a heck of a lot faster then a .82 hotside but will there be any surge is the question...??!!

FWIW BR standard hotside on the HTA 35R is the .63. You can get the .82 as an option though.
