So Martin, I know that this test is not about how a relativly stock evo, but what is your recommendation for a virtually stock evo? Which cams would you give the best marks to overall? (ex. HKS 272, HKS 280, FP4R, GCS3)

I'm talking about Daily Drivability & Great power for just a drop-in.

for me it kinda come down to HKS 272 or BC 280's drop right in. GSC S2's make more power but REQUIRE springs and retainers. I prolly wont go any larer than a HTA 30R but more than likely I will do a HTA FP Green. Even if i did BC's which are the least expensive and powerful of the cams testing, I do realize than ANY cam would be better than the STOCKER.

You have to be carefull with a stock turbo, too big of an exhaust cam with an early opening event will bleed off too much pressure on the combustion stroke. I would stay with something mild and possibly different duration on the intake & exhaust cam. This is something I'll be experimenting with. HKS 272 are still great, possibly S1's even though I didn't test them, FP4R's.

BC 280's have a rough idle and drive ability for the power gains. I ran the BC cams straight at zero on the cam gears to see how they would perform not being degreed in. The power was way down and they really idled and drove poorly. I would recommend the S2's, Kelford 272's or the FP5R's at that point.

How much worse is the GSC3 in terms of drivablity issues and you mention choppier idle? How bad is it? I'm looking to upgrade from the HKS 272 when I get my headwork done... bottom end is built already running on a 35r.

I agree with this. The BC-280's have a agressive idle, driveablity is moderate. Only every once and awhile is there any hicups while driving. 2 simialarly modified stock turbo 8's, 1 with older GSC 272's and My Evo with BC-280's, the 280's pulled more in each gear change. I love them, but I wish they were more precise with the manufacturing.

I'm in the same boat as you. I will eventuall graduate up to either the FR Green or FR GT30R. I just want something I know is going to tag-team well with those turbos, but still be good with the stocker.

By the way the S3's look fantastic, but I'm guessing it wouldn't work so well on a stock head.

I know AMS tested the S3 with GT35 but GSC said they dont suggest this cams on smaller that 42R.....

Will this be fine with my HTA37R?
What is the difference between the solid lifter against hydraulic on performance wise?

It seems that the BC 280's had about the same power down low as the stockers and performed fairly well, had a tad bit more power earlier the some of the others.

Heck even if you had to redegree the cams some, it seems they are worth the $$
