drivetrain help

i attempted to change my drivetrain fluids. and honestly im having trouble. i was wondering if anyone else have any problem? first i cant remove the fill plugs the tranny is too difficult, too tight on. and the rear diff. is so little room that i cant fit my socket wrench, and when i used my other wrench, it just stripped the bolt a little bit. i dont want to pay someone to do it, they are quoting me 100 dollars to do it using my fluids, for labor. VERY upsetting. did anyone use anything special or whatsoever? any suggestions?

thanks guys

everything was prolly over tq.ed from the last service. i would req that you change the plug gaskits also when you do get them out. you have to use a wrench on the diff due to space. i would req to use the closed end, and pref a 6 point wrench instead of the 12 point. 6 will have more serface area touching and lease of a chance of stripping the plug.

I had a shop change my drivetrain fluids once and when I did them the next time I had the same problem as you do . I took a tremendous amount of force to take out the plugs. For the Rear diff, I used a long 24mm wrench on the closed end for the fill plug and a 24mm socket for the drain plug. For the tranny you can either use a 17mm wrech and a rubber mallet to loosen the fill plug or use a breaker bar.

The bolt being so big and narrow is kind of troubling for many, but I think the most unpleasent thing is changing the oil on the transfer case, the best way ( I think ) is to use the biggest medical injector + a narrow tube and blast away

I find the hardest part of the transfer case fluid change is removing the fill plug. I usually need a breaker bar and there isnt much room in there.

I'ts a pain, both getting the bolt off and getting the fluid in the transfer case. But after you've done it 5 - 10 times then it becomes less of a problem

Everything is pretty easy, you just got to play with it a bit to find the right tools for the job.

The only part I've ever had problems with is that stupid drain plug on the transmission. It is a horrible plug design. Can not use a socket or a wrench to get the thing off. Speaking of that, next time I do that I'll probably have to replace the plug. It looks horrible from trying to break it loose from how tight it was.

Clearance and leverage is your best friend. Jack the car up high enough to get a good size breaker bar in there and do the job for you.

With the car on stands as high as you can go, there is plenty of room to use a torque wrench and good old rubber mallet to break things loose.
