I can vouch for what he's experiencing. I received and installed a brand new Perrin complete intake kit about a month ago, and found the other day that my adapter plate had the same seperation issue. However, I did not call Perrin. I simply mixed up the JB Weld and put down a fine layer to seal up where the seperation was.

The problem is that they only weld the ring onto the plate in 4 locations, and then paint over it, so the only seal for 80% of the mounting ring is paint. Eventually the paint cracks during install and/or vibration, and then there's obviously nothing to prevent air from passing through the crack unfiltered. I may have never known about it though, because the cracks are extremely fine. From what I can tell, the appropriate fix is for them to put a fine bead all the way around the ring instead of just four spots. That means more time, effort, and skill though, so we'll see.

Agree that it's odd. Perrin says they haven't received any reports of this. My MAF was previously bolted up to a Buschur filter that has very thin metal backing that flexes pretty easily, so it's possible it could be warped, but that bakelite material doesn't seem like it has any flex in it, so it could potentially be non-true from the factory. I put a straight edge on it and it seems to be true. When the MAF snaps into place on the heat shield, do others notice gaps between the corners of the MAF and the heat shield, or is it pretty much flush? Mine has at least 1-2 mm gap at each corner. Once that gap is taken up by the bolts tightening, then the heat shield plate flexes back enough to pop the ring on the MAF sides and crack the paint on the heat shield. Tried taking the MAF gasket off but it made no difference.

I guess if S2000s can run ITBs then I can live with leaks around the Perrin filter.

I think you may be over tightening the MAF adapter plate. If I recall correctly, there appears to be a gap but it is actually tightly sealed by the gasket already. Those bolts require very little torque, just a slight snug past finger tight is perfect.

GG06MR - thanks for chiming in. I didn't think this could be an isolated issue.

From my experience anything that's subject to vibration from the engine will loosen up unless it's tightened properly. Does Perrin suggest in their install directions to not tighten the bolts fully and to leave an air gap between the MAF corners and the heat shield? Not sure where my copy is as I didn't do the initial install. If they aren't supposed to be fully tightened then they should be nylock nuts or a locking washer or something to prevent them from backing out. Or better yet, they should dimple those those bolt hole areas on the shield to help take up the gap.

Sorry all for diverting the topic a bit on this issue...

"New" Buschur filter = Vibrant filter.

Went from HKS filter to Perrin and my idle AR changed from 14.5 to around 12. Should I be worried? Did not try any full throttle pull.

Yes. Sounds like the MAF needs to be scaled using EcuFlash.

I thought no MAF scaling was done in the air filter test when they swapeed out so many different filters.

That is correct; zero ecu changes were made througout this test.

I am facing the same problem as you. Was not expecting so much change in afr after change in the filter.

My guess is the big changes are from removing HKS' goofy adapter and going to Perrin's better (less restrictive) design.
