Air Filter Shootout Test - Results!
The problem is that they only weld the ring onto the plate in 4 locations, and then paint over it, so the only seal for 80% of the mounting ring is paint. Eventually the paint cracks during install and/or vibration, and then there's obviously nothing to prevent air from passing through the crack unfiltered. I may have never known about it though, because the cracks are extremely fine. From what I can tell, the appropriate fix is for them to put a fine bead all the way around the ring instead of just four spots. That means more time, effort, and skill though, so we'll see.
I guess if S2000s can run ITBs then I can live with leaks around the Perrin filter.

I think you may be over tightening the MAF adapter plate. If I recall correctly, there appears to be a gap but it is actually tightly sealed by the gasket already. Those bolts require very little torque, just a slight snug past finger tight is perfect.
GG06MR - thanks for chiming in. I didn't think this could be an isolated issue.
From my experience anything that's subject to vibration from the engine will loosen up unless it's tightened properly. Does Perrin suggest in their install directions to not tighten the bolts fully and to leave an air gap between the MAF corners and the heat shield? Not sure where my copy is as I didn't do the initial install. If they aren't supposed to be fully tightened then they should be nylock nuts or a locking washer or something to prevent them from backing out. Or better yet, they should dimple those those bolt hole areas on the shield to help take up the gap.
Sorry all for diverting the topic a bit on this issue...
