It cost me...
$450 for used trans
$2100 for Shep rebuild (it was in really bad condition)
$450 or so for the 5 speed conversion from shep (everything needed for the swap besides the shift knob)
Then labor if you dont do it yourself. Running the cables and everything is as easy as pie.

I would guess the cost is:
whatever you can find a used, rebuilt, or new 5spd tranny for + $200-500 for all parts, varying only by how thrifty you are, or if you want to use all new parts. + labor if you dont like getting dirty

hate to revive an old post but what did you guys do about the center console and shift boot? I wanted to keep my MR center but wasnt sure if the 5 spd shift boot would work with it

I kept the MR center console and the only problem is the shift boot can't stretch far enough to stay with the shift knob when you're in 2nd, 4th, and R. I'm going to switch to a 5MT shift console because of this.

Im not really sure what the difference is between the transfer cases but I still have the original one that was mated up to the 6 speed and it works fine with the new 5 speed
